Rolex Bracelets – Oyster vs Jubilee vs President

In our long-running “Vs.” series, we will often compare two watches, or brands, and compare and contrast how they fare against one another when evaluated in terms of both their technical aspects and aesthetic qualities. In our newest blog entry in the series, that format will still be utilized. However, we will be doing something in this particular entry that has not previously been done on the blog before.

For this entry, we will be learning more about the different types of Rolex bracelets that are available on watches. Because our primary focus is often the watch itself, the bracelets they are attached to are only sometimes a part of the discussion. In the interest of further educating both newer and more experienced collectors, we will compare the Oyster vs. Jubilee vs. President bracelets to see if there is a superior model among the three.

Below, we will explore the history and technical aspects of these three pillars of Rolex style.

How Many Types of Rolex Bracelets Are There?

Technically, there are four bracelet styles available among Rolex bracelets. These include the Jubilee, the Oyster, the Pearlmaster, and the President. However, this article will not feature any further discussion of the Pearlmaster bracelet beyond this section.

This is not, in any way, shape, or form, a reflection of the quality of the bracelet itself. The Pearlmaster is notable, as it was released in 1992 and is crafted entirely out of precious metals. However, it was discontinued in 2022, and only limited quantities of them were produced. As such, we believe it is better to focus on the other three bracelets, which are much more widely available to consumers.

The Oyster Bracelet

The Oyster Bracelet is the original Rolex band, and in many ways, is the de facto standard bearer for the company in terms of its watch bands. It was originally released in the late 1930’s and is notable for being the only bracelet style that is available on every line of Rolex watches.

While historically significant, its design has led collectors to say that it is sometimes less comfortable than its counterparts. This bracelet is also notable for being the most cost-effective of the three options.

The Jubilee Bracelet

Originally released in 1945 to commemorate Rolex’s 40th anniversary, the Jubilee bracelet managed to improve on several elements of the original Oyster watch band. By utilizing a semi-circular link design that is comprised of five pieces, it added a more elegant and refined look to the bracelet.

From a practical standpoint, many seasoned watch wearers prefer the Jubilee bracelet because its design allows the watch band to “breathe,” making it more comfortable for the wearer.

The President Bracelet

Since its release in 1956, the President bracelet has distinguished itself from the other watch bands in two very distinct ways. The first is that, unlike the other two offerings, this bracelet is only available in 18k gold or platinum, making it a more luxurious option. The other is that it is only available on the Day-Date line of watches.

In terms of its design style, it is somewhere in between the Oyster and the Jubilee – more elegant than the former, and less delicate than the latter. The result is a bracelet that has a unique and distinguished look to it, not unlike the office that it is named for.

Oyster vs Jubilee vs President – A Clear Winner?

Ultimately, the winner here is whichever strap best suits your needs. The Oyster is likely your best choice if you are looking for something more utilitarian. For something a little more stylish but that is not super exclusive, the Jubilee is a happy and comfortable compromise. And for those looking for the most luxurious option possible, a President bracelet will be the best option.
