Who is Prince Abdul Mateen?

Abdul Mateen ibni Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah was born on August 10th, 1991 in Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei. He is the tenth child and fourth son of the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, and his second wife, Mariam binti Haji Abdul Aziz.

He would spend his formative years studying at the St. Andrew’s School in Bandar Seri Begawan. He would spend his teenage years studying at two different secondary schools – Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College and the Jerudong International School.

He would go on to receive a Bachelor of Arts in international politics from King’s College London and a Master of Arts in international studies and diplomacy from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.

Military Career

Beginning in his youth, Abdul Mateen expressed a strong interest in pursuing a career in the military. At the age of 18, he began a commissioning course for army officers at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The following year, he graduated as an officer cadet from the same institution. He would shortly thereafter be promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant.

In May 2021, after spending ten years in the service, he was promoted to the rank of Major. Shortly thereafter, he underwent commando training at the All Arms Commando Course, from which he successfully graduated.

Royal Wedding

Abdul Mateen officially married Princess Anisha Rosnah on January 11th, 2024. The wedding party following the ceremony lasted ten days and was conducted at the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. Some of the most prominent officials in the Middle East and Asia attended the wedding.

Notable guests included the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo. Because many of the countries in this region operate on friendly terms with one another, and because he is a member of a royal family, Abdul Mateen is familiar with many of the nearby world leaders who run the neighboring countries.
