Roger Federer’s Early Tennis Career

Federer played his first junior match at the age of 14 in Switzerland. However, his most notable success came two years later, in 1998, when he made his first appearance at Wimbledon. He would win both the singles and doubles titles for the juniors division that year.

Mainstream Success as an Athlete

Later that year, Federer would turn pro and make his first ATP appearance at the 1998 Swiss open. He would enter the top 100 in rankings for the first time in 1999, but his proper breakthrough would come several years later, in 2001.

In 2001, at Wimbledon, Federer caused a major upset when he defeated the heavy favorite, and tennis veteran, Pete Sampras. This would cause sports journalists and fans to take notice of the young upstart and would significantly impact the trajectory of his career.

While 2004 and 2005 were also excellent seasons for the imposing young player, 2006 would go on to be his best season, statistically speaking.

In 2005, Federer would play his first match against his fiercest rival, Rafael Nadal. While the two were intense competitors on the court and often brought out the best in one another athletically, they have been friends off the court for many years. Their friendship has often been seen as an example of true sportsmanship by many, and fans and the tennis press alike have been ardent supporters of it.
