Whether they intend to or not, presidents often become unintentional trendsetters, in certain instances, when it comes to fashion. This is arguably most true when it comes to the type of wristwatch that they choose to wear. In some cases, the president in question has become fairly linked, in the minds of the public, with the watch that they wore during their time in the Oval Office.
Below, we are going to examine a handful of notable presidential wristwatches, and the presidents who relied on them. Time and technology may have changed the wristwatch, but the importance of the office certainly has not faded away.
Joe Biden – Rolex Datejust
Rubber B believed that it would be fitting to conclude this article with the current president of the United States, Joe Biden. Biden has long been known for wearing various versions of the Rolex Datejust, a watch he favored long before he ever became President.
The Rolex Datejust was a favorite of Eisenhower, and it makes sense that Biden would want to honor one of his predecessors with a call-back such as this. Both men share a strong sense of patriotism and commitment to public service, so Biden is likely something of a fan of his. Learn more here

Barack Obama Watch Collection – 44th U.S. President
One of the most influential and beloved political figures of the last half-decade, Barack Obama’s presidency was a historic one, albeit not without its fair share of controversy and detractors as well. However, there is no denying the impact he made during his time as President of the United States. Even in his post-presidential life, he still continues to be an active public figure, both in the political arena and outside of it. learn more here
Bill Clinton and His Panerai Luminor
Bill Clinton is the 42nd President of the United States. He won the role from former President Bush Senior, and remained in office for a full 8 years, having won a second election. He served from 1993 through 2001. Clinton has made a career out of politics. He served as Governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and then again from 1983 through 1992. Learn More Here
George Washington
It turns out that the fondness for presidential wristwatches goes all the way back to the first man to hold the office, George Washington. While he didn’t actually own a wristwatch, he did own at least three pocket watches that historians can confirm existed. One of them was produced by a watchmaker who is unknown, however. The second was a Jean-Antoine Lépine piece, and the third was a James McCabe pocket watch.
The pocket watch produced by the unknown watchmaker was later gifted to a friend, which likely explains why the name of the watchmaker has been lost to time.
Thomas Jefferson
The third president of the United States was also something of a watch collector. He owned a Daniel Vaucher pocket watch, which he later gifted to the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe.
While it would have been interesting to see this develop into something of a tradition among presidents, unfortunately, that has not been the case up to now.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt – Tiffany & Co. Movado Triple Calendar
Few Presidents in the United States have ever, or will ever, enjoy the legacy of change and comradery that Franklin Delano Roosevelt left behind when he passed away. In fact, FDR was so popular that he was a four-term president, and it was only after his passing that a two-term limit was applied to the office of President.
In his later years, FDR wore a Tiffany & Co. Movado Triple Calendar watch, which had been gifted to him by his son. It became a symbol of his in his later years, and he famously wore it at the Yalta Conference, after the end of World War II.
Harry S. Truman – Gallet Flying Office
Arguably the first American president who could be called a true watch connoisseur, Harry S. Truman was known for owning a number of different wristwatches, including a Universal Geneve Tri-Compax, a gold Heuer chronograph, and a Tiffany pocket watch during his time in office.
However, the Gallet Flying Office, which was actually given to him in the early years of his presidency, is the piece historians most identify him with. The austerity and import of the watch certainly befit a man whose personal motto was famous “The buck stops here.”
