Within the world of luxury timekeeping, few partnerships capture refinement, heritage, and global prestige as powerfully as the alliance between Rolex and The Championships, Wimbledon. The relationship unites two institutions defined by tradition, excellence, and an unwavering commitment to precision. The result is a cultural pairing as elegant and enduring as the legendary tournament itself.
Rolex has been trusted for more than a century by explorers, athletes, artists, and leaders. A Rolex watch transitions effortlessly from black-tie events to world-record dives and serves as a symbol of enduring craftsmanship. The brand’s long-standing connection with Wimbledon strengthens that legacy further, culminating in one of the most recognizable and celebrated dials in the modern Datejust collection, the Rolex “Wimbledon Dial.”

The History of Rolex Wimbledon Partnership
Wimbledon is the oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament in the world. Held at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club in London, the event is synonymous with sporting nobility, immaculate grass courts, and unmatched global visibility.
In 1978, Rolex became Wimbledon’s Official Timekeeper, marking the beginning of a collaboration grounded in tradition, elegance, and technical mastery. For more than four decades, the iconic crown has presided over Centre Court, ensuring every match is timed with absolute precision. The partnership has become one of the most respected brand relationships in professional sports.
The values shared by Rolex and Wimbledon, excellence, heritage, integrity, and performance, naturally paved the way for a symbol of this union: a distinctive Datejust configuration now universally recognized as the “Wimbledon Dial.”

The Wimbledon Rolex Datejust Dial – A Modern Icon of the Datejust Collection
Introduced in 2009 on the Datejust II and later refined for the Datejust 41, the Wimbledon dial has become one of the most sought-after and visually recognizable Datejust designs of the modern era.
Key Design Elements of the Wimbledon Dial
The dial features:
- Roman numerals outlined in rich emerald-green, echoing the color of Wimbledon’s legendary grass courts
- A sunburst slate/rhodium grey base, providing exceptional depth and a refined play of light
- White gold hands and crown for lasting brilliance and anti-tarnish performance
- A balanced, minimalist layout that merges sport and elegance
The green Roman numerals are not merely decorative; they symbolize the enduring relationship between Rolex and the tournament that has defined championship tennis for generations.
Two-Tone Variations Inspired by Wimbledon Tradition
The Wimbledon configuration is also available in Rolesor, Rolex’s proprietary steel-and-gold combination. These versions draw inspiration from the gold-trimmed clocks found around the Wimbledon grounds, an elegant nod to the event’s visual identity.
The dial is available across Rolex’s Datejust 41 range, including:
- Oystersteel
- White Rolesor
- Yellow Rolesor
- Everose Rolesor
This breadth of choice allows collectors to tailor their Wimbledon-themed Datejust to their preferred aesthetic, whether understated steel or classic two-tone refinement.
Generations of the Rolex Datejust: A Brief Overview
The Rolex Datejust has undergone numerous evolutions since its introduction in 1945. The modern Wimbledon Datejust appears primarily in two contemporary generations:
Rolex Datejust 41mm (2016–Present) , Reference 1263XX Series
When Rolex discontinued the Datejust II in 2016, it introduced the Datejust 41, a refined and more elegant interpretation of the 41mm format. The watch preserved the larger case size but returned to slimmer proportions reminiscent of classic Datejust lineage.
Key Characteristics
- Slimmer, more balanced lugs
- Oyster or Jubilee bracelet options
- Fluted or smooth bezel choices
- Caliber 3235 movement with a 70-hour power reserve
- Accuracy within Rolex’s stringent −2/+2 seconds per day
The Rolex Datejust 41 “Wimbledon”
The Wimbledon dial pairs exceptionally well with the Datejust 41 due to:
- Ideal dial proportions
- Enhanced light play on the sunburst rhodium finish
- A sport-elegant wrist presence suited for both men and women
Popular references include:
- 126334 (White Rolesor fluted bezel)
- 126300 (Oystersteel smooth bezel)
- 126333 (Yellow Rolesor)
- 126331 (Everose Rolesor)
Rolex Datejust II (2009–2015) , Reference 1163XX Series
The Datejust II represented Rolex’s response to the rising popularity of larger case sizes. Introduced in 2009, it featured:
- A 41mm case
- Thicker, more athletic lugs
- A wider bezel
- Caliber 3136 movement
Although visually bolder than the Datejust 41, the Datejust II set the foundation for the modern Wimbledon dial, as it debuted the green-outlined Roman numerals that would later define the collection.
Rolex Datejust 36mm (2018–Present) , Reference 1262XX Series
In 2018, Rolex upgraded its 36mm Datejust with the Caliber 3235, offering:
- A 70-hour power reserve
- Chronergy escapement
- Improved precision and shock resistance
The Wimbledon dial is also available in this size, making it a compelling unisex option for those preferring traditional dimensions.
Rubber B Straps for the Rolex Datejust “Wimbledon”
Rubber B produces several Swiss-made strap options engineered specifically for the Datejust family. The precision-calibrated, vulcanized rubber designs pair exceptionally well with the Wimbledon configuration, especially in tones that highlight the dial’s emerald-green accents.
Rolex, Wimbledon, and a Legacy of Excellence
The partnership between Rolex and Wimbledon represents more than brand alignment, it reflects shared values. Both institutions honor tradition while embracing modern innovation. Both stand at the pinnacle of their respective worlds. And both continue to inspire collectors who appreciate craftsmanship, performance, and enduring beauty.
The Rolex Wimbledon Dial embodies the spirit of this legacy: elegant, athletic, contemporary, and unmistakable.
