In 1860, Giovanni Panerai opened his shop in Florence on Ponte alle Grazie. In addition to selling and repairing watches, it went on to become the first watchmaking school in the Italian city. The watchmaker combined Italian design sensibilities with traditional Swiss watchmaking to create a watch brand that is still going strong over a century later.
The cushion-shaped case with its characteristic crown-protecting bridge that they are known for today was introduced in 1950 on their Luminor model. The name Luminor refers to the tritium-based compound used to give the display its luminescence – replacing the radium-based paste used in Radiomir models prior to that date.
The watchmaker began manufacturing its own movements in 2005 with the introduction of their P.2002 movement. The mechanical movement featured an 8 day power reserve and GMT function. The growth of the company prompted the watchmaker to open its own manufacture in Pierre-à-Bot, Switzerland in 2014. They now manufacture many of their own movements in-house, including the P.9000 calibre.
