Q: How do I know which Rolex Submariner size or generation I have?
The easiest way is to check the papers from your watch, or locate the reference number on your actual Submariner—found on the case wall between the lugs at the 12 o'clock position (the bracelet will need to be removed to see the number). Other details below can help you determine your model:
Vintage Submariners (Non-Ceramic): Models include ref. 1680, 5513, 16610, 16610LV, 16800, and 168000. (The Non-Ceramic 40mm Submariner generation essentially ran from 1953–2008/10).
Ceramic 40mm Submariners: Ref. 116618, 116619, 116613, 116610, 114060. The first Submariner Ceramic was made of full gold, launched in 2008 with a Ceramic Bezel and Glidelock Clasp, followed by Two-Tone Submariners in 2009, and finally Steel models in 2010. (The Ceramic 40mm generation ran from 2008–2019).
Ceramic 41mm Submariners: Ref. 126618, 126619, 126613, 126610, 124060. In 2020, Rolex updated the Submariner Ceramic line with a larger 41mm case, slimmer lugs, and a wider bracelet, also featuring a Glidelock Clasp. Q: What is the difference between an Oyster Clasp and a Glidelock Clasp on Submariners?
Both clasp types come on an Oyster Bracelet, but look and function very differently. The Oyster clasp attaches directly to the straight pin or spring bar inside of the clasp. To change the bracelet fit, a tool must be used to manually move the pin or spring bar from one hole position to another. The Glidelock clasp uses a more advanced internal adjustment system. Instead of removing or repositioning the spring bar, the Oyster bracelet remains attached to a sliding link that moves along a series of notched ridges inside the clasp, allowing for quick, precise, tool-free adjustment.
Q: What is the difference between Ceramic and Non-Ceramic Bezel Submariners?
The ceramic (Cerachrom) bezel was introduced between 2008–2010, replacing aluminum insert bezels. This generation also brought in the Glidelock clasp system.
