What is the Deal with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and His Panerai Watch Collection?
Among action stars, it’s hard to make an argument that there is a bigger one than Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Whether we’re talking about the man himself or the box office receipts from his films, he is an imposing presence wherever he goes and always knows how to make a memorable entrance when he steps into the room.
A large part of that has to do with his personal style, and an inimitable part of that is his trademark Panerai watch, which he is often seen photographed with, both on-set and off. A man like The Rock is only going to wear the best Panerai watches and use the best Panerai straps – but let’s take a couple of moments to delve into why he loves these watches so much in the first place.
A Brief History of the Panerai Watch
In order to really understand the Rock’s deep love for Panerai watches, you have to take a bit of a dive into the history of the watch itself – and it’s a surprisingly interesting one, believe it or not!
The company was initially founded in 1836 in Florence, Italy. However, it really came to prominence in the 1930s, when it started making watches for the Italian Royal Navy, including its elite Special Forces squad, the Decima Flottiglia MAS. The brand didn’t even make its watches available to the general public until 1993, by which they’d long since perfected their tough and durable watches.
Interestingly enough though, it was not the Rock, but another well-known American action movie star that brought the watch to prominence in the United States – Sylvester Stallone. He discovered the watch while working on the film Daylight in Florence, and fell in love with it soon afterward. Not to be outdone, his friend Arnold Schwarzenegger also got himself a Panerai watch, and from that point on, it became the go-to watch for action stars in Hollywood – even the Rock’s on-screen nemesis (and off-screen friend) Jason Statham has one as well.
In short, these watches were made to be hard to break and keep on ticking even after they take a licking. After hearing all that, it isn’t hard to see why the Rock loves this watch so much – it’s a lot like the man himself. Of course, he also expresses his own personal style preference by picking out his choice of watch straps for Panerai.

When and Where Has the Rock Worn His Panerai Watches?
Now that we’ve talked a little about why Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson loves his Panerai watches – and his Panerai watch straps – so much, let’s go a little bit into the number of places, both in and out of the movies, that he’s been seen wearing them over the years. Some of them are likely to recognize, but a few of them may not.
Luke Hobbs – Fast and Furious 5 – Panerai Luminor Submersible PAM 0025
Dwayne Johnson has been making movies for a while now, but his career truly hit a stratospheric level when he began playing Luke Hobbs, the DDS agent who always gets his fugitive in “Fast and Furious 5.”
It wasn’t just The Rock who made a huge impression through – his Panerai Luminor Submersible made a pretty big impact as well, especially considering all the stunts it had to survive – being shot at, nearly blown up, and being taken underwater! As always though, the Rock makes saving the world look easy – maybe it was the alligator Panerai straps that helped him appear so effortless?
Raymond Gaines – San Andreas – Panerai Luminor 1950 Submersible
In the big-budget action epic “San Andreas,” the Rock plays a helicopter pilot who has to save his family when the San Andreas Fault begins to come apart and causes a massive earthquake in California. How did he manage to do it? Well, having a helicopter helps, for starters, but we’re pretty sure that the straps for his Panerai watches also played a small, but crucial, role in helping to save the day.
Wall Street Journal Cover – Panerai PAM 625
Another memorable moment where the Rock managed to show off his personal style, and let us see a different side of him at the same time, was when he did a photoshoot for the cover of the Wall Street Journal. The cover is notable for showing a softer image of him, as he looks rather placid while playing with a group of baby chicks in front of him and smiling.
In the photo, he is seen prominently displaying his Panerai PAM 625 model watch, along with some very classy Panerai straps as well. It’s good to know that he doesn’t have to save the world all of the time, right?
What Other Panerai Watches Does the Rock Have in his Collection?
While we cannot be certain as to the full extent of his collection – after all, we don’t know the guy personally – he has been photographed wearing the following models of Panerai watches at various points in time:
- Panerai Luminor Power Reserve Automatic Acciaio
- Panerai IWC Big Pilot Heritage
- Panerai Breitling Transocean Chronograph Unitime
- Panerai Ceramic Luminor GMT
Panerai Watches Have a Strap Culture as Well
An interesting thing to note about Panerai watches is that, unlike a lot of other watches, these have a high-end strap culture to them that is unique to the watches. There are a wide variety of straps for Panerai watches – some come in alligator, some come in leather, but all of them are extremely stylish and expertly complement the watch they were designed for.
