There are few actors who can claim to have had more of an impact on American cinema, or who are more beloved, than Robert De Niro. Since formally beginning his acting career in 1963, DeNiro has remained one of the most visible actors the country has ever produced, and his output in the 1970s alone places the two-time Academy Award winner in a legendary, rarified air that includes such contemporaries as Al Pacino and the inimitable Marlon Brando.

DeNiro is also a watch collector as well and has sported many interesting timepieces throughout his long and storied film career. Let’s take a closer look at the life, career, achievements, and watch collection of Robert De Niro.

Who is Robert De Niro?

Robert DeNiro was born Robert Anthony De Niro Jr. on August 17th, 1943 in New York City, New York. His parents, Virginia and Robert, were both painters, and he would end up being the only child of the couple, who would go on to separate two years later.

De Niro began taking acting classes as a child and would make his stage debut at age 10, playing the Cowardly Lion in a production of The Wizard of Oz. By his own admission, De Niro was a shy child, and he took an interest in acting as a way to help him combat that.

Robert De Niro’s Early Show Business Career

De Niro’s first film appearance was in Encounter, which was released in 1965. Three years later, in 1968, he would appear in the film Greetings, which would see him working with a young but talented filmmaker named Brian DePalma. They would work together again in DePalma’s comedy The Wedding Party.

Mainstream Success as an Actor

While De Niro would gain positive reviews for some of his other films, such as his appearance in Bang The Drum Slowly, which was released in 1973. However, it was another film that would come out that year that would truly garner national attention and a newly raised profile.

Mean Streets was his first collaboration with the now legendary director Martin Scorsese, and it was the film that truly allowed De Niro to break through to a wider audience. He would follow that up with his performance as young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II, for which he would win his first Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actor.

Two years later, De Niro and Scorsese would collaborate again, this time on Taxi Driver, which would earn De Niro an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He would appear in Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter in 1978, which would garner him yet another Academy Award nomination.

He would collaborate a fourth time with Scorsese (the third being his appearance in 1977’s New York, New York) in the 1980 sports classic Raging Bull, in which he would play a heavyweight boxer, Jake LaMotta. This film would finally cement his status as one of the world’s best living actors, and finally earn him his second Academy Award, this time for best actor.

It remains, to this day, one of the most popular films of its genre.
