As one of the leading manufacturers of custom rubber watch bands, Rubber B has an immense appreciation for the time and skill it takes to successfully craft a luxury timepiece. However, the word “craft” can have a lot of different connotations, as it can refer to a plethora of different skills – such as acting, for example.
There are few actors more instantly recognizable in the entire world, at this point in time, than Robert Downey Jr. After Iron Man made him globally recognizable back in 2007 and turned him into one of the biggest movie stars on the planet within a matter of weeks, Downey continued to star in a series of hit movies for Marvel Studios, which culminated with the release of Avengers: Endgame in 2018. Along the way, the man managed to build up a pretty impressive watch collection as well.
Rubber B would like to take a few moments to explore not only the watch collection of Robert Downey Jr. but the history of this beloved thespian as well.
Who is Robert Downey Jr.?
Robert Downey Jr. is an American actor and producer who initially came to prominence in the late 1980’s. After appearing in several small film projects, he would join the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1985, though his tenure there would only last one season before he (and the majority of that season’s cast) were replaced.
He would eventually gain widespread acclaim for his performance in the film Less Than Zero, which was based on the Brett Easton Ellis novel. From there, he would move on to more prominent film roles, such as starring as the lead in the 1992 biopic Chaplin, for which he was nominated for an Oscar.
However, the mid 90’s saw Downey’s fortunes change, as his battle with drug addiction grew more public and began to harm his career. He would become virtually uninsurable, to the point where directors were no longer able to work with him. Jodie Foster and Mel Gibson went to great lengths to cast him in Home For the Holidays and The Singing Detective, and he remains friends with the pair to this day.
In 2007, after spending several years getting sober, Jon Favreau cast him as Tony Stark in Iron Man, which would revitalize his career and allow him to play the part in several other Marvel films over the next ten years. He would also go on to star in two Sherlock Holmes films as the titular character, and in 2020, he would star in Dolittle, a 19th century set version of the Dr. Dolittle story.
Based on the number of cinematic successes that Downey Jr. has been a part of over the last thirteen years, it is likely that he will be gracing our movie theater and television screens for many years to come.
What Kinds of Watches Are in Robert Downey Jr’s Watch Collection?
Robert Downey Jr. owns several different watches, including a ceramic Jaeger-LeCoultre that he wore in Iron Man 2. Available at a retail price of $92,000, Downey Jr. considers it to be among the finest watches in his collection.
He also owns a steel Omega Speedmaster Moon Professional and a black steel Bamford Watch Department Customized Rolex GMT Master II Ghost, which retails for almost $20,000. According to Downey Jr., he purchased the watch because he had purchased another timepiece for a friend for his birthday and then decided that he wanted one for himself as well.
He also owns a green steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner, which is informally known among collectors as the “Green Money” Rolex. He also owns a vintage Baume and Mercier wristwatch, which he inherited from his grandfather. His grandfather, a pharmacist, pawned the watch after he had gotten into some legal trouble with regards to the pharmacy that he owned, as he was filling prescriptions from people who had forged their doctor’s signatures.
He also owns a Bell and Ross Titanium Orange timepiece, which was a gift given to him by his friend Ben Stiller after they finished filming Tropic Thunder. He also owns a steel Patek Philippe Nautilus, which retails for $33,200, and was given to him by his wife as a birthday gift.
