This time of year is one of the most important, and exciting, for those who work in the horological industry or who are passionate about watches. The reason for that is because of Watches and Wonders, the annual industry trade show event where luxury brands reveal their new watches each year. Watches and Wonders 2023 promises to be full of exciting surprises and updates to classic watches that many people love.
In the past, Rolex has chosen to not participate in the event. However, within the last couple of years, the company has reversed course and decided to be a part of Watches and Wonders. There is always a great deal of anticipation around what the company will do each year, so here are this year’s Watches and Wonders 2023 releases from Rolex.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
The Rolex watch from Watches and Wonders 2023 that seems to have generated the most interest is the new Rolex Cosmograph Daytona and with very good reason. The watch has not only received an updated display and a redesigned case, but it is also implementing a brand-new movement as well.
The Caliber 4131 is an entirely new movement that is making its debut in this updated Cosmograph. New movements are of great import and interest, as Rolex usually spends years developing them before they are announced and released to the general public.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller
Another surprising update came in the form of the new Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller, another product line that could certainly be described as a bit more niche. Its primary audience, as its name implies, is professional pilots and those who spend a lot of time traveling for work.
The new Sky-Dweller not only introduces some new changes to the design of the watch but it is also powered by the Caliber 9002, which is being introduced to this line of watches for the first time.

Rolex GMT-Master II
Rolex has released two new yellow-gold versions of the GMT-Master II at Watches and Wonders. Rather than offering the expected black or black and red bezel color combinations, Rolex has introduced a new ceramic bezel color combination of gray and black.
The two new references, the GMT-Master II Yellow Rolesor and the GMT-Master II 18K Yellow Gold are both 40 mm in diameter, have black dials, and are equipped with a Jubilee bracelet with Oysterlock clasp and Easylink 5 mm comfort extension. Both models are powered by Rolex’s in-house caliber 3285 and have a 70-hour power reserve when fully wound. The yellow gold and steel yellow gold versions with the new bezel color combination are sure to be popular with GMT fans.

Rolex Explorer 40
Rolex has launched a 40mm Explorer, which does not replace the 36mm version but rather sits alongside it. This marks the first time Rolex has introduced two size options for the Explorer range. While the 40mm model may not be strictly necessary, it offers consumers another option and caters to those who prefer larger watches.
The new model shares the same movement, steel case, bracelet, and dial layout as its 36mm counterpart but looks substantially larger due to its thin bezel. One differentiating design aspect is the location of the namesake on the dial, with the 40mm version featuring it in the same position as the 36mm Explorer.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual in 31mm, 36mm, and 41mm
Rolex has unveiled a new steel Oyster Perpetual watch in 31, 36, and 41mm sizes with a sky-blue “Celebration” dial. The watch is decorated with a cluster of different-sized bubbles, bringing together the colors from 2020 lacquered Oyster Perpetual. The new design is considered the wildest Rolex dial design since the palm-frond Datejust in 2021.
The watch comes with a proprietary Oystersteel and a movement that depends on case size. The new Rolex has more imagination and wit than anyone realizes and is expected to be difficult to get.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42
One watch that generally seemed to surprise many people, even seasoned observers, was the release of the new Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42. The Yacht-Master line is much larger than the average Rolex watch, and as such, it tends to be something of a niche piece among collectors.
Rolex has attempted to change this by having this be the first Yacht-Master to be encased in titanium, and only their second overall watch to utilize the material, after the Oyster Perpetual Deepsea Challenge.
Rolex Perpetual 1908
A new Perpetual 1908, has also been added to the product lineup as well. The watch is incredibly svelte, which stands to reason when one learns that this timepiece was inspired by a design from 1931. The watch effortlessly combines an elegant, vintage design with modern complications. It has been several years since a new watch was added to the Perpetual line, so this piece was bound to generate some interest as well.
This is another watch that is also introducing a new caliber as well. The Caliber 7140 was specially designed to be slimmer than the average watch movement in order to accommodate the design of this watch.
Rolex Day-Date 36
The final watch to be discussed at Rolex’s Watches and Wonders 2023 panel is undoubtedly the most exciting and intriguing. Rolex surprised almost everyone with the release of the new Day-Date 36, despite not being known for their playful aesthetics.
This watch has created quite a stir in the watch community because it includes a disc with seven inspirational words in place of the day, as well as a window that displays one of 31 emojis instead of the date. The watch, which is available in white gold, yellow gold, or Everose, features a multicolor jigsaw motif on the dial, baguette-cut sapphire indices, and a President bracelet. Rolex has released new Day-Date watches with stone dials, including carnelian, turquoise, and green aventurine, in addition to the emoji watch.
All new Day-Date watches are equipped with caliber 3255, which incorporates the patented Chronergy escapement and a blue Parachrom hairspring. The release of the emoji watch is a sign of the times and is being seen as a new direction for Rolex in the watch space.
The lightly colored dials for this new iteration of the Day-Date watches have jigsaw pieces and words like “Happy,” “Love,” and “Hope” on the dial. The result is a timepiece that feels surprisingly joyful and playful and represents a pleasant surprise from the renowned watchmaker.
