Who Is Eminem?

Eminem was born Marshall Mathers III in St. Joseph, Missouri on October 17^th, 1972. His father, Marshall II, and his mother, Debbie, were both musicians. His father would abandon the family when Eminem was only one and a half years old. He and his mother would move around to several places before settling in Detroit, which Eminem today considers to be his hometown.

Eminem’s Early Music Career

For the better part of a decade, Eminem was an underground rapper in Detroit who began to steadily build up a fanbase. Though he started formally rapping in 1988, he would not record his first album, Infinite, until 1997. Because the album was an independent project, it did not sell a lot of copies, and Eminem almost considered quitting music entirely.

After coming in second place at the 1997 Rap Olympics, an intern working for record producer Jimmy Iovine asked Eminem for a copy of his music. Iovine was immediately impressed and passed the record onto none other than legendary West Coast hip-hop producer Dr. Dre.

Dr. Dre would receive a significant amount of criticism from his peers, initially, for agreeing to work with a white rapper. However, Eminem’s talent was undeniable, and the two would go on to produce one of the most seminal rap albums of all time: The Slim Shady LP.

The Slim Shady LP and Mainstream Success

In 1999, Eminem and Dr. Dre would release The Slim Shady LP, finally giving him the major label push that he needed to succeed. With singles such as “My Name Is” and “Role Model” receiving massive radio airplay, Eminem would bring rap into the mainstream in a way that few other rappers before him had been able to. Suburban youth were developing an interest in rap for the first time, and Eminem would go on to become a verifiable superstar in the process.

As of today, Eminem has released 11 studio albums, several of which have been #1 records. His most recent outing, Music to be Murdered By, was released in 2020.
