Halloween is often one of the most anticipated times of the year for many people. Horror movies and TV shows are suddenly everywhere, and an influx of fall drinks, such as pumpkin-spiced lattes and apple ciders (both alcoholic and non), will likely become available at some of your favorite restaurants.

This is also the season of costume parties for many people, which means that they want to figure out what to wear well in advance. This includes finding the right kind of watch to wear to an event, especially if the costume party in question is of a more formal nature.

What is a Rolex Ghost Dial? From Daytona to Datejust

Below, we are going to explore a unique type of Rolex that is ideal for just such an occasion: a Rolex Ghost dial watch. However, as we’ll soon learn, a Ghost Rolex may prove somewhat challenging to find for even a more seasoned collector.

What is a Ghost Bezel Watch?

The reason that a ghost bezel watch is so difficult to find is that Rolex does not officially make these watches – at least, not intentionally. They are the result of a unique manufacturing defect that occurred primarily on Rolex watches that were produced in the 1970’s and 80’s.

Essentially, what happens is that the lettering on certain dials begins to fade over time. If that dial has a white or silver background, the result is that the lettering, depending on what angle the watch is held at, begins to appear as if it has completely disappeared into the face of the watch.

Because these watches have to occur naturally and cannot be purchased directly from Rolex, they are very popular among collectors on the secondary market. As such, they tend to be more expensive than the same model watch without a ghost dial. This is especially true of any Daytona Ghost variants, as the Daytona is the most in-demand watch that Rolex currently produces.

What Rolex Models Are Most Likely to Have Ghost Dial Watches?

As previously stated, ghost dial watches exclusively occur on watches from the 70’s and 80’s. After that time, Rolex began using a new material for their inserts to prevent this from occurring. With that being said, there are certain models that one is more likely to see a ghost dial on, including the following:

·        Rolex Submariner

·        Rolex GMT-Master

·        Rolex Datejust

Of the three, the Datejust ghost dial is arguably the easiest, and most affordable, of the three to find. While this is not a complete list of all of the watch models that could have ghost dials, these models are the most common.

It is worth noting that, at the other end of the spectrum, the Rolex Daytona 116519LN is among the rarest of the ghost dial watches and retails between $40-50K on the secondary market.
