The Anti-Magnetic Watch Rolex Milgauss: It’s all in the name…

The First Anti-Magnetic Watch
The First Anti-Magnetic Watch, The Rolex Milgauss

The first Anti-Magnetic watch, the Rolex Milgauss is a horological first in the history of watchmaking.  The name Milgauss may have absolutely no meaning to a non-watch enthusiast at first. However, like every other detail on a Rolex, the name Milgauss aptly describes the watch’s ability to resist a magnetic field of 1,000 gauss (a watch is normally considered “antimagnetic” at 60 gauss).

The First Anti-Magnetic Watch

The MILGAUSS model was introduced by Rolex in 1954 for people who had to work in environments with very strong magnetic fields like research laboratories, aeronautic facilities, and power plants. This allowed such professionals to wear their watch to work without having problems with the movement due to magnetization. Rolex achieved a superior rating of 1,000 Gauss by encasing the movement in soft iron, known as a Faraday cage.

They also included a new hairspring material known as Parachrom Blue which is also not affected by magnetism. Unfortunately, such a specialty watch was not in great need by the masses. Because Milgauss clientele was limited to certain job descriptions, the Milgauss was not a good seller for Rolex during its first 20 years, and eventually production took a two decades long pause.

In 2007, a new Milgauss was introduced with a slightly larger case of 40mm and a 3131 movement. White and Black were color options for the dial, which were accompanied by a second hand which resembled a lightning bolt. They have to versions with black dialed, a regular sapphire glass and a green sapphire glass which has a green hue when viewed at an angle.

The Rolex Milgauss became the standard timepiece for the European Oranization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva and many other scientific institutions. The Milgauss is more than just a tool.  It is an exceptional example of Rolex timeless dedication to precision and the art of keeping accurate time under any circumstances.
