The Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph reference 5970 is one of the best watches ever made. If you are wearing one of these watches you could easily be recognized as a serious watch collector, even if this is the only watch in your collection. This watch is currently selling for around 200k at auction and is highly regarded by singer songwriter and famous celebrity watch collector John Mayer. Only about 2,800 of these were ever produced. It was available in only white or pink gold until 2007. In 2008 Patek Philippe only produced the 5970 in yellow gold, making it the rarest of the colors available. From 2009 to 2010 Patek Philippe produced the 5970 exclusively in platinum.
The 5970 was introduced in 2004 to replace the exceptional 3970 line and was discontinued in 2010. The case material in the 5970P is platinum, but it is also available in yellow gold 5970G, white gold 5970J and rose gold 5970R. The platinum version is considered the most valuable due to the metal value.
The Patek Philippe 5970 is the last Patek to use a Lemania Base Movement, caliber CH 27-70 Q. It has a 40 mm case with 13.5 thickness and a leather strap. The black dial of the platinum version is quite stunning, but there are silver and white dial faces available.
The Patek Philippe 5970 has a perpetual calendar, a chronograph with leap year indication and a date/moon phase. It has a tachyometer scale around the rim. It has a dial at 9 o’clock giving a 60 second timer, at 3 o’clock there is a 30 minute dial, and at 6 o’clock the date dial contains a moon phase. It has a day of the week window next to the month window, which is stylistically superior to the Patek models separating the day date and time windows all over the face. Cased in sapphire crystal on both sides of the watch, this watch gets a respectable depth of 100 feet of submersible protection. It supports about 65 hours of power reserve as well.
Rubber B offers replacement bands for the Patek Philippe line of watches in lug widths of 18 mm, 20 mm, and 22 mm. Officially the Patek Philippe 5970 has the odd lug width of 21 mm, making an exact fit band for this rare model nearly impossible to come by. However, the 20 mm strap by Rubber B should fit nicely on this Patek Philippe 5970, complementing its historical style that continues in the long tradition of the grandfather ref. 3970 (produced: 1986-2004) and great-grandfather ref. 2499 (produced: 1950-1985) and the great-great grandfather ref. 1518 (produced: 1941-1954).
It is highly recommended to remove the Patek Philippe strap before wearing it and saving it for later resale. The Patek Philippe strap will not have the strength and durability offered by the Rubber B strap. Rubber B offers 6 straps for the Patek Philippe 5970 including Black Leather in Full Grain or Genuine Alligator, Brown Leather in Full Grain or Genuine Alligator, and Red Devil with a Red on Black on either Black Full Grain or Genuine Alligator.
