One of the most hotly debated, and frequently asked questions, within the world of luxury watches is who makes the better timepiece: Rolex or Patek Philippe? The two brands have a lot in common – they both make luxury watches, they are both Swiss companies, and they are both known for holding themselves to extremely rigorous standards when it comes to the technical excellence and luminous beauty that defines their craftsmanship, which has come to be globally known.

Patek Phillipe is known for producing sports watches, and one of their brands that have begun to build a truly large following in the luxury timepiece world is the Aquanaut line, which as its name implies, is a sports/diving watch. The brand, which is often seen as the “little brother” of the Nautilus line, has truly made a name for itself in the last couple of years and most certainly deserves to stand on its own two feet.

In keeping with that spirit, Rubber B has decided to spend some time looking at one of the line’s most popular models – the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R. We’ll take a look at the history of the watch and its technical specifications, give you our thoughts about the overall aesthetic of the watch, and finally, explain how you can even further customize the Patek Aquanaut 5167R with some fantastic custom rubber watch straps.

Let’s Start With a Little History on the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R

In order to fully appreciate this watch, let’s take just a few moments to examine its history a little bit. Released in 2016, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R is one of the newer models in the Aquanaut line of Patek Philippe luxury timepieces.

The first Aquanaut watch was released in 1997, so this watch was released on the 19th anniversary of the line’s initial launch (close, but no cigar, right?). The Aquanaut line was initially designed to be a more cost-friendly version of the Nautilus line of watches, which are arguably Patek Philippe’s most well-known collection of timepieces.

However, a funny thing happens when a company puts out a genuinely great product to the public – oftentimes, it finds an audience of loyal devotees that will continue to champion it to their friends and family for years to come. And though it took the Aquanaut several years to build up its fan base to the size that it is now, the watch line has consistently been one of Patek Philippe’s most popular products.

And as we take a deeper look into the technical specifications of the watch and explain why the aesthetic is so beautiful on this particular piece, it isn’t hard to see why the Patek 5167R has developed such a large following in a relatively short amount of time. People who collect luxury timepieces are known for having exacting standards, which means that, above else, they know exactly what they want, and they know quality when they see it.

What Are The Technical Specifications of the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R?

One of the first things watch collectors will notice about the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R is how well-crafted it is from a technical standpoint. The watch measures 16 cm in circumference and has a 40 mm case, which allows it to expertly straddle that sweet spot between durable and economical in terms of its size. This watch can be comfortably worn on a wrist as small as 13 cm.

Things to Know About the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R is only 8.5 mm thick and measures 47 mm from lug to lug, which speaks to its compact and svelte design. Though it is most certainly a sports watch, it can easily fit under most shirt sleeves or cuff links and is equally viable whether you’re in an office or spending a day on the beach.

One of the most interesting aspects of this watch is its strap, which Patek Philippe calls a “composite” strap. What this actually means is it is a rubber watch strap, but not an ordinary rubber watch strap – not by a long shot. This rubber watch strap has been treated with chemicals to help ensure its durability. That means this watch strap can go into the pool, handle the natural salinity of ocean water, and is specially manufactured to resist aging due to exposure to the rays of the sun. In short, as we’ve previously mentioned, this watch is truly a sport watch, and that fact is even reflected in the design of the watch strap.

Another place where the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R truly succeeds from a technical standpoint is with regards to the design of its clasp.  The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R has a twin trigger double deployment clasp on the bottom, which ensures that it is not going to slide off of your wrist at any time. Additionally, the inner portion is integrated into the spring action, so there are no metal parts jutting out of the clasp. The economy of parts used here is just one more feather in the cap of the brilliant technical design team at Patek Philippe.

Things to Know About the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R

While we’re on the topic of the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R’s technical specifications, we need to take some time to examine the caliber of this watch, as there is a lot to say here, all of which is positive. The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R uses the 324 SC caliber, which has 29 jewels and is comprised of 213 parts. It also features an interdirectional winding for superior efficiency and an anti-magnetic silicon hair spring. It operates at a very high efficiency due to using unlubed ceramic rotor bearings.  Finally, the watch has a 35-45 hour power reserve.

As you can see, the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R is clearly well-constructed from a technical standpoint. However, that is not the only thing worth writing home about here, as the watch is also beautiful to look at as well.  Let’s take a couple of moments to look into the aesthetic of this luminous watch.

How Does the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R Rank in Terms of Aesthetic?

The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R is also a work of art in terms of its appearance as well.  The dial is designed in a geosphere guilloche cut style, and it has a highly visible luster due to its slightly metallic quality.  The timepiece also has alternate brushed and finished facets on the case, which helps to create the visual impression of cut gems.

The dial contains large Arabic numerals, which have been applied with a lovely rose gold finish to make them both highly visible and luxurious. The Arabic numerals share dial space with loomed elements, which makes this, overall, a very easy watch to read, even in the dark.  There is also a white Lancet style second hand, which is easy to see against the chocolate colored background of the dial.  There is also a highly visible date window at the numeral for 3, but it does not upset the balance of the watch at all.

In short, this watch is both highly functional and lovely to look at.  The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R has truly proven that the Aquanaut line is capable of stepping out from the shadow of its “big brother” line, the Nautilus. However, there’s so much more to owning a Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167R then just the watch itself.
