Rolex has recently made some waves with the release of their new Explorer model, and since this storied product line has a very interesting history behind it, we decided that we would take a look at the product more closely. We will start with a quick look at the history of the Rolex Explorer, then look at the technical specifications for this watch, and finally conclude with a brief snapshot of the overall look of the watch.

What Should You Know About The Rolex Explorer 2021?

What is the History of the Rolex Explorer Product Line?

Rolex has managed to last as long as they have, in part, because of a fairly simple two-part strategy: the first is simply crafting truly excellent timepieces, and the second is often running very savvy marketing campaigns for their watches.

The second one of those things is very important to the history of the Rolex Explorer, as it began its journey as one of several timepieces that Rolex specially produced to commemorate an important event in human history. Rolex likes to take this tack when they release a product, as it’s an excellent way to give the timepiece an immediately recognizable brand and story.

What Should You Know About The Rolex Explorer 2021?

The Rolex Explorer was originally released in 1953 to commemorate the first successful expedition to the top of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. This has forever cemented the watch in the public’s mind as a “science watch,” and as such, it is often quietly overlooked when discussing Rolex’s more high-profile product lines.

What Are The Technical Specifications of the 2021 Rolex Explorer?

In an attempt to revitalize the product line a little bit, Rolex has done some very interesting things with this latest iteration of the Rolex Explorer. The most immediately noticeable is the size – this watch measures at 36 mm in diameter, which makes it considerably smaller than the normally seen 41 mm that has become the de facto standard on the market today.

Why did they do this? The number was not chosen at random – it was the size of the original Rolex Explorer that was released back in 1953. The case and bracelet are still made from Rolex’s patented Oystersteel material, and the winding crowns are screw-down and protected by a Twinlock double waterproofness system. It is also waterproof for 330 feet.

These last two statistics read as somewhat unusual, because this is a watch that is meant to be used in active situations, such as scientific research. However, we have seen Rolex timepieces, such as the new Submariner, that have a much higher waterproofness (1,000 feet) and a Trilock triple waterproofness system. It is strange that Rolex would have chosen to not try and replicate those numbers for this watch as well.

The caliber is a 3230 that is made in-house by Rolex, and it has a power reserve of up to 70 hours. It currently retails for around $6,450, making it an excellent choice for a starter watch.

How Does the Rolex Explorer 2021 Look?

The aesthetic is also of note on this particular timepiece as well. Rolex seems to be trying to both move the line forward while also honoring its legacy as well, and for the most part, it succeeds in doing so. This particular timepiece has never been touted for its look, and that was always intentional – it was meant to be used as a scientific tool, not as a display piece.

With all of that being said, this is probably the most beautiful iteration of the Rolex Explorer that we’ve seen yet. It comes in two different available options, with either the traditional steel case or an Oystersteel with yellow-gold trim available as well. It will be very interesting to see what Rolex does with this particular product line moving forward, especially in terms of its design.
