The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph Stainless Steel with contempory duo-toned “Grande Tapisserie” dial is one of the most notable timepiece achievements in modern horology.  The chronograph has become exceptionally popular since the Rolex Daytona has seen sky-rocketing valuations.  The AP Chronograph does not disappoint with its exceptional style, black dials on the white waffle-print dial.  The AP adds a date window between the 4 and 5 o’clock position, making it one of the few chronos with a date window.

This AP design is powerful and masculine.  The octagonal bezel is locked down by clearly visible screws.  The chronograph pushers and screw-down crown have large jagged bolt-like constructions making it appear more like a rugged tool that belongs in a toolbox or work-bench as much as on a wrist.  It is water resistant to 50 meters but is seemingly built like a tank to withstand the rigors of sporting and work activities. Since 1972 AP has bucked the trend, breaking conventions by launching the Royal Oak line of the earliest luxury sports watches.

AP has a reputation for innovation.  It was the first manufacturer to utilize the alacrite 602 superalloy in its manufacturing.  In 1981 AP released the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar.  That model also launched the calibre 2120/2800 allowing it to be the thinnest of its type in the world.

Rubber B designed two color Vulcanized rubber straps (Jet Black or Navy Blue), engineered to fit Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 39mm (various models that come originally on a leather strap or a steel or gold bracelet). This strap features a solid insert for Blocked Integration to the watch case.  If your Royal Oak came originally on an alligator band, then be aware that you will remove your gold plots and store them away with your alligator band.

The exclusive Velcro® Alfatex® fastening strip provides a comfortable and esthetically pleasing mount to the AP watch case. The attachment loop contains a titanium insert for optimum performance and strength. This Vulcanized rubber strap has been tortion-tested for extreme strength and security.  This strap comes with an optional retaining loop, although it is not necessary to use.

All Rubber B straps are made in Switzerland of pure vulcanized rubber. No coating, blends or bonding are used in the production of these bracelets. The Audemars Piguet “JUMBO” EXTRA-THIN Ref #15202IP.OO.1240IP.01 is a stunning timepiece with a smoked blue dial with “Petite Tapisserie” pattern and a sleek satin finished Titanium case and bracelet. The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Extra-thin The Hour Glass Reference 15205BA.OO.1240BA.01 has a stunning 18-carat yellow gold case with glareproofed sapphire crystal on the front and case back.  The rotor is engraved with “The Hour Glass” logo and the legend is engraved with “One of Fifty” indicating the rarity of this reference since only 50 of these masterpieces were ever manufactured.

The dial is green with the “Petite Tapisserie” pattern.  The hour markers are gold and painted with luminescent coating.  The case is 39mm and has an 8.1 mm thickness.  The bezel and bracelet are made from the same 18 carat gold as the case.  The bezel has the octagonal design with visible screws.

The reference 15205BA.OO.1240BA.01 is powered by an automatic caliber 2121 which is made with 36 jewels, and sports a power reserve of 40 hours.  Although the date window is visible at 3 o’clock, notably absent from the AP is the second’s hand.  The beauty of the thin movement, though is visible from both the front and back of the timepiece.

The Audemars Piguet Ref. #26124ST.OO.D018CR.01 is part of the long tradition of AP timepieces designed with dedication to perfection.  Designed in 2016, this 39mm case Royal Oak has a steel case and the traditional octagonal bezel with visible screws at each corner – a design that became the standard in 1972.  The blue dial has a raised “tapisserie” pattern which adds stunning interest to the timepiece.   The hour markers are in white gold and filled with luminescent paint for visibility at night or in the dark.

At the 9 o’clock position there is a power reserve indicator.  At 3 o’clock is a date dial with a date hand, rather than a date window, so often seen in other timepieces.  At 6 o’clock there is a unique 2nd time dial with both minutes and hours hands.  This is quite different from other complications which often use a single hand to indicate the 2nd time zone.  It is truly two clocks in one singular timepiece.  Next to the 2nd time dial, at the 7 o’clock position, is a small Day/Night time dial.

The AP 26124ST.OO.D018CR.01 is powered by a caliber AP 2329 with module 2846 which is built with 33 jewels, and features a power reserve of 38 hours.  The timepiece is protected by sapphire glass and supports a waterproofness to a depth of 150 feet.

Rubber has been around for quite some time.  However, the early excitement of utilizing rubber was tainted by the issues of pure rubber – it would freeze and crack in the winter, and it would melt and become sticky when exposed to the summer heat.  Nathaniel Hayword and Friedrich Ludersdorf discovered that by adding sulfur to pure rubber, it would eliminate stickiness.

However, in 1839, Charles Goodyear, famously linked to the name well-known Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., elaborated on Hayword’s discovery by developing the vulcanization process, where rubber could be heated by a stove and charred, producing a perfectly cured leather-like substance (yet, in many ways, superior to leather).  The word “vulcanize” comes from the Roman god of fire, Vulcan.  By heating rubber to a specific temperature and then removing it from the heat at the exact right point in time, the rubber would become vulcanized.

The resulting vulcanized rubber substance became extremely strong, weatherproof, and elastic.  Sulfur is an accelerator, which combines and creates bridges in the molecules, allowing natural rubber to be transformed into a substance which can be expertly molded while keeping its shape – free of swelling or melting in spite of hot or cold temperatures. Later enhancements to vulcanized rubber include adding carbon black or zinc oxide to retard deterioration caused by oxygen and ozone.

Vulcanized rubber has several advantages over most any substance in the world.  It has excellent strength and resilience and easily returns to its original intended shape after bending.  It resists wear and tear and oxidation.  It repels fats, oils and other solvents, while also limiting water absorption.  It has a wide temperature range making it flexible and reliable between −80 °C to +250 °C and won’t break down until it hits temperatures above 350 °C.

The watchmaking industry first began adding rubber bands to their timepieces in the 1950’s.  Rolex, Tudor, IWC and Blancpain were some of the early timepieces found with rubber bracelets.  However, it wasn’t until the 1960’s that the use of rubber bands became mainstream, largely due to its usefulness on diver and sports watches.  It’s weather and water proof qualities were perfect for watch owners with an active lifestyle.  The Swiss watchmaking industry adopted and perfected the use of vulcanized rubber bands as an extension to its artistry.  Bands are designed with many colors, even bright colors like orange, red and yellow – enhancing the palette of what is possible.

Rubber bands are easy to fit and adjust and generally can be worn by both men and women of any wrist size, universally.  They are comfortable to wear and can be designed to fit the deployant buckle of the manufacturer.  Vulcanized rubber bands are scratch resistant and are a low-cost (and in many ways a superior) alternative to steel and gold bands made by the manufacturer.
