Montres Tudor S.A. was created by Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf in 1946 to provide modestly priced wristwatches backed by the technical and business savvy of Rolex. The logo evolved over time from the Tudor Rose on early models to the shield that they company uses today.
“For some years now, I have been considering the idea of making a watch that our agents could sell at a more modest price than our Rolex watches, and yet one that would attain the standard of dependability for which Rolex is famous. I decided to form a separate company, with the object of making a marketing this new watch. It is called the Tudor Watch Company,” said WIlsdorf at the brand’s launch.
The history of Tudor dive watches dates back to their first Submariner models in the mid 1950s. The Marine Nationale reference 9401 shown above was designed for the French Navy and features a strap made from a parachute belt with a ghost bezel. Tudor also became known for chronographs, like the Big Block reference 9430\0 shown below.
Today, the watchmaker is known best for the Tudor Heritage Black Bay collection, which includes configurations in stainless steel and bronze. They also offer the Black Bay Dark featuring a black PVD coating. Other popular models in the 2016 collection include the Ranger and North Flag.
