Most people know John Cena for his long and storied career as a professional wrestler in the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) promotion, or for his work, in more recent years, as a film actor, where he often pivots between high-profile action vehicles and comedies.

However, Cena can also play the piano, speak fluent Mandarin, and is a noted watch collector as well. In honor of this well-rounded athlete and actor, let’s spend a few moments looking more closely at his life, career, and watch collection.

Who is John Cena?

John Cena was born on April 23rd, 1977, in West Newbury, Massachusetts, to Carol and John Cena Sr. As a young man, he would attend Central Catholic High School before eventually transferring to Cushing Academy, where he would complete his secondary education.

He would then enroll, and be accepted to, Springfield College, where he would become an NCAA Division III All-American center while playing on their football team. During his football career, he would wear the number 54, which is still used on his WWE merchandise today.

Before working as a professional wrestler, Cena pursued a career in bodybuilding and also worked as a limousine driver to support himself.

Early Success In WWE

Cena began to train as a pro wrestler in 1999 at the Ultimate University, a performance training center operated by Ultimate Pro Wrestling and managed by Rick Bassman. For the first few years of his career, Cena would wrestle largely in smaller independent promotions and use a robotic character billed as “The Prototype.”

After several years, Cena would finally work his way up to the main roster of WWE from one of their farm programs alongside Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, and Dave Bautista, all of whom would go on to have significant success in the promotion and be referred to as the OVW 4. Ironically, all of these men except Lesnar would later go on to star in their own respective action films, though Orton would not be as successful as his cohorts in this regard.

Cena would go on to be one of the most decorated professional wrestlers of the modern era, with Bleacher Report naming him one of the 10 greatest WWE wrestlers of all time, and no less than WWE CEO Vince McMahon calling him the company’s very own “Babe Ruth.”

Cena wrestles in an irregular capacity today, as he also branched out into film acting as well, a place where he has also had a significant amount of success.

John Cena Turns to Acting

In 2006, John Cena would appear in his first movie, an action vehicle entitled “The Marine” for WWE Studios. The film was moderately successful, and he would go on to star in two more films for the company, “12 Rounds,” “Legendary,” and “The Reunion,” which were released in 2009, 2010, and 2011.

Mainstream film success for Cena, though, would come in 2015, during his breakthrough role as Steven in Judd Apatow’s “Trainwreck,” which was a collaboration between the noted comedy writer/director and actress/comic Amy Schumer. Playing one of Schumer’s love interests, many critics commented on Cena’s gift for a certain kind of droll comedy, and he would capitalize on this in the future, alternating between action roles that took advantage of his bodybuilder physique and his natural comic timing.

2017 would see Cena appear in “Daddy’s Home 2” and voice the lead character in “Ferdinand,” a film adaptation of the noted children’s book. The following year he would co-star in both “Blockers,” the directorial debut of comedy writer (and 30 Rock alum) Kay Cannon, and “Bumblebee,” a standalone Transformers film in which he would co-star with Hailee Steinfeld. These two films would solidify Cena’s status as a bankable leading man.

In 2021, Cena would appear as a lead in two of the most successful films of the years, both of which were massive franchise action films. The first was “F9,” the ninth entry in the long-running “Fast and the Furious” series, and the second being “The Suicide Squad,” which was the sequel to David Ayer’s 2017 film. Cena’s character in that film, “Peacemaker,” will also be receiving his own spin-off television series as well.

What Kind of Watches are in John Cena’s Watch Collection?

Like many celebrities, John Cena seems to be a fan of collecting Rolex watches and owns several of them. He seems to be especially fond of his GMT-Master II Batman, which was released in 2013. This watch is notable because it was the first watch to have a bi-color ceramic bezel.

He has also been seen wearing a Rolex Explorer II “Polar” model, which was originally crafted with cave explorers in mind. It features a 24-hour bezel and an orange hand that helps distinguish between daytime and nighttime hours.
