John Mayer is one of the most prolific and talented musicians in the world today. His musical career, which has spanned pop, folk, and blues, is shaped by his excellent vocals and highly skilled guitar playing. Few musicians earn the respect of their peers the way Mayer has been able to do over the years.
However, as we have mentioned on the blog before, in passing, Mayer is also a well-known watch collector as well. In honor of all of his achievements, let’s take a closer look at the life, career, and watch collection of John Mayer.
Who is John Mayer?
John Mayer was born on October 16th, 1977 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His father, Richard, was a high school principal. His mother, Margaret, was a middle school English teacher.
Mayer developed an interest in the guitar from an early age after seeing Michael J Fox’s performance in Back to the Future. He would then start taking lessons from a local guitar store owner, Al Ferrante. After he was hospitalized in his late teens, Mayer made the decision to pursue music professionally.
John Mayer’s Early Show Business Career
Mayer and his friend Clay Cook both left Berklee after two semesters and moved to Atlanta to pursue music full-time. They would go on to start a band called LoFi Masters. The two would break up shortly afterward due to Mayer’s desire to pursue pop music. Eventually, he would release an independent EP under his own name, Inside Wants Out, in 1999.
Mainstream Musical Success
Mayer would eventually go on to release his debut album, Room For Squares, in 2001. It would spawn a number of hit singles, including “No Such Thing,” which remains one of Mayer’s most popular singles. By 2002, Mayer had a number of other hit singles to his name, including “Why Georgia” and “Your Body is a Wonderland.”
His second album, Heavier Things, would also go on to have great success as well. It is best remembered for the single “Daughters,” which would receive significant airplay on the radio. It would also be prominently featured in a number of television shows and films as well.
Mayer would go on to release several albums from the years of 2006 to 2017. They included Continuum in 2006, Battle Studies in 2009, Born and Raised in 2012, Paradise Valley in 2013, and The Search For Everything in 2017.
Current Projects
His most recent album, Sob Rock, was released in 2021. The album embraces a more yacht rock type of sound, which Mayer has been moving towards for several years. Mayer is also part of Dead and Company, wherein he tours with musicians from the Grateful Dead.
What Kind of Watches Does John Mayer Have in His Collection?
Over the years, Mayer has amassed a watch collection that, by his own estimation, is worth in the “tens of millions of dollars.” He is particularly fond of the Rolex GMT-Master, which he owns several different versions of. He also owns a Submariner and a Daytona watch as well. He has mentioned in the past his deep affinity for Rolex watches.

The Smurf, which has a white gold case, is currently out of production. A grey market purchase will set you back around $50,000 USD.

Mayer’s favorite Rolex model is the Rolex Daytona. The Daytona was first introduced by Rolex in 1963. Mayer’s Daytona collection includes vintage pieces from the past as well as modern Daytonas.
The Rolex Daytona Ref. 116500 is one of the most difficult Rolexes to obtain these days. Mayer has been spotted wearing it several times. This modern classic retails for $14,550 USD but can fetch up to $36,000 USD on the black market. If the rumors are true and Rolex retires the 116500, the price could rise even further.

Mayer’s white gold Daytona with rainbow gem bezel is one of his more exclusive pieces. Everyone is familiar with Rolex’s current rose gold variant, but Rolex used to make a white gold variant as well. This piece, Ref. 116599RBOW is currently available for around $245,000 USD on the secondary market.
Without a doubt, Bamford Watch Department is one of the forefathers of the now-thriving customized Rolex industry. This London-based customizer was once the most well-known player in the watch customization game. In contrast, Bamford stunned the watch industry when it was acquired by LVMH in 2017. Bamford has only worked on LVMH brand watches since then (especially Zenith). Mayer appears to own one of the pre-LVMH Bamford customized Rolexes. He’s wearing a steel Daytona with a baby blue dial and a shiny PVD finish. Finding a good deal on a Bamford watch can be difficult because there aren’t many on the secondary market. A Bamford Daytona is currently for sale for 40k
John Mayer wearing a Rolex Daytona Cosmograph
– John Mayer is known for his passion for Rolex watches. He is wearing in, the picture above, a Rolex Daytona Cosmograph with an oyster bracelet.
Mayer has been seen wearing a variety of vintage Rolex Daytonas, including several with Paul Newman dials. These pieces are highly sought after and can fetch millions of dollars at auction. Mayer’s gold Rolex Daytona Ref. 6263 with Newman-style dial. Phillips auctioned off a similar piece with a “lemon” grené dial in 2017 for approximately $4,000,000 USD. With the current state of the watch market, the price would have to be even higher today.
Mayer obviously appreciates the Newman Rolex Daytona’s history. He has a steel 6263 in addition to his gold 6263 and wears it on a bund strap comparable to the one Newman wore his renowned Daytona on. Similar pieces have previously sold at auction for almost $400,000 USD.
What Audemars Piguet does John Mayer wear?
In addition to Rolex, John Mayer has a sizable collection of Audemars Piguets. Mayer: “my Royal Oak might be my favorite piece from my collection”. So, let’s talk about the APs that Mr. Mayer has been seen wearing.

The 15202 and the 16202 are the perfect size at 39mm and come the closest to the original Royal Oak released in 1972. The combination of the watch being a Royal Oak, in gold, and with a blue dial has resulted in sky-high market prices for this piece. They can be purchased for as much as $190,000 USD.
Obviously, John Mayer enjoys flaunting his superior wristwear while performing. Mayer was recently photographed wearing a 41mm Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon in titanium (Ref. 26530TI). This watch, which will be available in 2020, is AP’s first self-winding tourbillon. The dial features a sandblasted grey pattern that is unique to Royal Oaks. At the time of its release, the retail price for this piece was approximately $144,00 USD. On the secondary market, however, these pieces command a high price. If you want to buy one at market value, expect to pay between $240,000 and $290,000 USD.
