While he is arguably best known to audiences as the musical mastermind behind the international megahit “Uptown Funk” from 2015, which saw the renowned DJ collaborating with longtime friend Bruno Mars, Ronson had been working in the music industry for decades before achieving that kind of success. What is less known about him is that he is also a keen and discerning collector of luxury watches, so let’s take a few moments to learn more about both his long career of crafting earworms and his collection of elegant timepieces.

Mark Ronson, a British-American DJ, singer, and record producer, has been appointed as Audemars Piguet’s new Brand Ambassador.

Who is Mark Ronson?

Mark Daniel Ronson was born on September 4th, 1975 in Notting Hill, London, England to Laurence, a music manager, and real estate developer, and Ann Dexter, a writer and jewelry designer who is also a socialite.

In his youth, Ronson’s parents would divorce, and his mother would eventually remarry Foreigner guitarist Mick Jones. Jones would go on to write Foreigner’s famous song “I Want to Know What Love Is” about his relationship with Dexter. Ronson, along with his mother, stepfather, and his sisters, would move to New York City when he was eight.

Sean Lennon was one of his childhood friends, and in his teens, he managed to convince Jann Werner into giving him an internship at Rolling Stone magazine. He would attend high school at the Collegiate School in Manhattan before going on to attend New York University.

Mark Ronson’s Early Beginnings in Music

In the early 1990s, Ronson began to develop a reputation as a DJ on the New York Club scene, often charging $50 per gig. He began attracting audiences by managing to successfully working in a wide variety of musical styles into his setlists, including funk, hip hop, and rock.

What truly managed to set him apart though, was that he was playing songs that were popular in both the United States and the United Kingdom during his sets, which managed to give his work an international flair that local DJs simply could not compete with. He soon became sought-after and was being booked for high-profile events and private parties.

Mainstream Success and Future Endeavors

In the early 2000s, Ronson signed a deal with Elektra Records, and he would go on to release his first record, “Here Comes the Fuzz,” in 2003. Despite the fact that the record did not sell particularly well, it was very well received by critics and featured a plethora of guest appearances from various musicians, including Mos Def, Jack White, Sean Paul, Nappy Roots, and Rivers Cuomo.

In 2006, Ronson would share co-producer credit on Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” album. This would be an important album for a number of reasons, as it would go on to win several Grammys, and also forge a close friendship between the two that would last until Winehouse tragically passed away in 2011. Ronson has been open about the fact that the two were close friends and how deeply saddened he was about the loss of his creative partner and collaborator.

Ronson would continue to be active as a DJ and producer, releasing the studio albums “Version” in 2007 and “Record Collection” in 2010. However, it was the release of his fourth studio album, “Uptown Special,” in 2015, which was dedicated to Winehouse, that would prove to be his biggest success since “Back to Black.”

The reason for this was the release of “Uptown Funk,” a massively successful collaboration with Bruno Mars that spent 14 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Ronson would follow that album up with 2019’s “Late Night Feelings,” and though he’s been quiet since that time, we’re sure it won’t be too long before he puts another record out.

What Kind of Watches Does Mark Ronson Have in His Collection?

Mark Ronson is also known for being something of a style icon as well, so it shouldn’t be something of a surprise that he owns a number of luxury timepieces, including an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 36mm Champagne Dial Yellow Gold, a Rolex Daytona, a Rolex GMT Master Pepsi, a Piaget Altiplano ref. G0A32172, and a Chopard L.U.C XP. Additionally, he currently serves as a brand ambassador for Audemars Piguet.
