Who Is Oprah Winfrey?

Oprah Winfrey was born Orpah Gail Winfrey on January 29th, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi. She was named after the Biblical figure, but her name was regularly mispronounced, which led to her being called “Oprah.” Her parents were Vernita, a maid, and Vernon, a coal miner who later became a barber. Winfrey’s parents would never marry, and she was born into financial hardship.

Winfrey would spend the first six years of her life with her grandmother, with whom she lived in rural poverty. She would travel between the homes of her mother and father in her formative years before eventually settling with her father while in high school. When she was 17, she won the Miss Black Tennessee beauty pageant, which led to her having an opportunity to work at WVOL, where she would read the news part-time.

Winfrey would work at WLAC, now WTVF, in Nashville, where she would be the first African American female anchor and the youngest anchor in the station’s history.  She would then relocate to Baltimore, and then Chicago, where she would begin hosting her eponymous talk show in 1984.

The Oprah Winfrey Show and Mainstream Success

When Winfrey took over AM Chicago in January of 1984, the program was low-rated, and many did not see Winfrey’s potential or long-term viability in the role. However, she quickly began to attract viewers, largely because of her interview style, which was unique at the time.

Many talk shows saw their hosts berate or criticize their guests. Winfrey took the opposite approach, instead choosing to empathize with them and create a safe space to share their stories. Audiences connected with this emotional style, turning Winfrey into an internationally recognized figure.

By 1986, the program was renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show, which ran for an astounding 25 seasons, concluding on May 25, 2011. She would use that platform to begin a career as an actress, producer, and media mogul, one that has resulted in her being one of the most influential women in the world today.

Future Projects

In 2023, she was a producer on the musical adaptation of The Color Purple, the original version of which marked her first appearance as an actress. She will next be seen in Six Triple Eight, an upcoming war film that is to be written and directed by her good friend, Tyler Perry.
