The Panerai 438 Tuttonero (aka: Panerai Tuttonero – Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Ceramica – 44mm Reference PAM00438) watch, is one of the most magnificent watches Officine Panerai has ever created.

The Panerai 438 Tuttonero was launched in October of 2012. It comes from a long line of fine Italian watches that are beefy and masculine looking. However, women love wearing these pieces themselves, knowing that these Panerai timepieces can take a beating and keep on working.

This timepiece has a black ceramic case and bracelet with the vintage colors used on the dial for the perfect match. In addition, The Panerai 438 GMT ceramic features a large case of 44mm in size, a P.9001/B in-house movement, a power reserve up to 72 hours, water resistance up to 300 meters. The “Tuttonero” also comes with a date window and second time zone feature.

Panerai 438 Tuttonero

The Panerai Tuttonero – Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Ceramica – 44mm reference PAM00438 is a stunning timepiece with its gorgeous 44mm matt black ceramic case and band, and black dial.

Many collectors might have to take their favorite timepiece (example – any steel Rolex) and manually have it PVD’d with a process that might damage their timepiece. Since this was done by the manufacturer, you know that it will come perfect and will not destroy your original investment.

The hour markers are a beige color which is both highly visible and has a vintage look that many collectors want.  This coloring is followed through in the hour, minute and 24 hour GMT hands, as well as the small seconds dial.

However, in the dark, there is nothing vintage about this timepiece’s luminescence. The PAM00438 is brightly illuminated on its blue-green luminescent hour numerals, small second 12, 9, 6 and 3 o’clock positions and on the hour, minute, 24 hour, and small seconds hands.  Even next to the date aperture there is a small luminescent dash indicating the 3 o’clock position.

Panerai 438 Tuttonero In-House Automatic Movement

The movement is an automatic caliber P.9001/B, created entirely by Panerai.  It is built with a Glucydur balance, an Incabloc anti-shock device and a power reserve of 3 days.  It beats at 28,800 alterations per hour.

In order to provide a complete PVD look, even the movement itself has undergone a black galvanic treatment process which can be viewed through the sapphire crystal on the back of the timepiece.

Panerai engraved “TUTTONERO” the back of the timepiece. The PAM00438 also displays a power reserve indicator on the back which is tastefully hidden so that you don’t have to clutter the minimalistic front side with this important functional indicator.

The front side of the dial retains functions such as the small seconds and date window. However, the 24 hour hand makes this timepiece ultra special since it tastefully provides GMT features with 2 timezones which is critical for pilots, businessmen and professional athletes and performers that travel frequently.

The PAM00438 caliber P.9001/B starts off from a P.9001 base.  It is an automatic movement with 29 jewels, 229 components and 13 3/4 lignes.  It has double barrels, a seconds reset device, a date window and, of course, a GMT function.

The large winding crown is protected by Panerai’s trademark protection device in matching black ceramic.  The reference PAM00438 is water resistant to 300 feet.  The protection device not only protects the crown, but also provides a tighter waterproofness when it is in the locked position.

In some timepieces it might be easy to forget to screw down the crown to its most waterproof position.  This is not the case with Panerai.  If the locking device is undone, it is easy to notice, and therefore less likely to cause an accidental infiltration of water into this fine timepiece.

Although the Tuttonero is not currently sold, Panerai has a new version, the PAM01438 which not only is available with similar features but is available at the price of $14,900.  The PAM01438 has the same DLC coating, and the 24 hour hand.  However, it is powered by the newer P.9010/GMT calibre which has 31 jewels and 199 components.

Rubber B has designed several different lines of vulcanized rubber straps for the Panerai Tuttonero – Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT Automatic Ceramica reference PAM00438.  The classic series of bracelets utilize “Blocked Integration” engineering to create a flawless, motionless mount to the Panerai case.  Although the strap perfectly fits the Panerai buckle, a 316L stainless steel tang buckle is included.

The Panerai Tuttonero dark black matt coloring will look spectacular with nearly any color in the Rubber B collection.  Rubber B offers 6 solid colors and 4 dual “vulchromatic” color options, including a solid black rubber strap.

Recently Rubber B has come out with two more bands including the SwimSkin Alligator which is made of either Black or Brown rubber but looks and feels like actual alligator leather.  No harm has come to any animal with the making of these durable and water resistant bracelets.

The Swimskin Ballistic option is not only a new phase in rubber band manufacturing, but it is delightfully attractive.  For the owner of the PAM00438, the Ballistic adds even more distinctive appearance to an already attractive timepiece.

All Rubber B straps are made in Switzerland and are made to the highest standards.  No coating, blends or bonding are used since each band is manufactured from pure rubber.  For more information go to our Panerai Luminor 1950 type II page here.
