The Panerai Luminor 1950 Automatic 3 Day PAM 320 (PAM00320) is an amazing timepiece for multiple reasons. Not only is it a slick looking, but it is a powerfully built timepiece built to last. It has the awesome GMT function too, along with the standard functions such as a date window, small seconds dial at the 9 o’clock position and the standard hour and minute hand. The GMT hand has a big triangular point which contains luminescence with a slightly different coloring from the other hands and hour markers.
Panerai Luminor 1950 Automatic 3 Day PAM 320
The Panerai Luminor 1950 Automatic 3 Day PAM 320 has a sandwich dial which means it is built with layers just like a sandwich. It has a top layer which has the black dial and then there are cutouts for the hour markers at the 12, 9 and 6 o’clock positions in an Arabic numbering, and of course the rest of the hour markers are also cut out around the dial.
Under the black dial is a luminescent dial which provides both a layered effect and incredible luminescence without any threat of bleed which sometimes happens for timepieces over time. Some watchmakers solve that with metal outlines around the lume paint, but since the Panerai lume sheet is below the dial, there is no threat of bleed. Also, since it is a sandwich dial, it has a much different look than a typical timepiece.
The Panerai Luminor 1950 Automatic 3 Day PAM 320 is powered by a 3 day automatic caliber. The caliber P.9001 is an in house design at Officine Panerai with 72 hours of power reserve and made from 29 jewels. The power reserve indicator appears through the viewable window on the back. This not only provides an exceptional view into the inner workings of this exquisite timepiece but it has the effect of looking under the hood of the car and checking the power gauge.
As if the power of the timepiece wasn’t enough, this unit gives you exceptional features. Particularly the GMT function allows you to track 2 timezones. It is a bit under the radar since most GMT’s have colorful bezels and markings around to indicate an added 24 hour clock. This GMT has no such markings or colored bezel to detract from the absolute beauty of this timepiece.
The polished bezel is offset by the matte of the underlying case adding a unique look and layered approach, not unlike the sandwich dial itself. The timepiece comes with both a brown leather band and a black rubber band. It has a standard Tang clasp. The case is 44 mm which is slightly larger than other brands, but it has a bigger thickness and the locking nut also gives it a beefier feel to it.
It has many of the standard features you would expect in a luxury timepiece including a sapphire crystal both on the front and back of the unit providing scratch resistance. It also has 330 feet of water resistance. However the locking nut provides extra protection for the winding crown. This timepiece feels invincible. Yet at a price of just over $7000 after market, the price is within anyone’s grasp.
Rubber B has developed a tremendous amount of bands for the Panerai Luminor lineup. One of the great things about Panerai timepieces is that you can dress up the watch with a band or dress it down with another color band. The black dial and stainless steel case can match well with many color bands. Visit our Panerai watchband page for the 44mm 1950 timepieces here.
Rubber B offers 6 color bands that have the “Blocked Engineering” features built in. It also has the 100% Rubber – band that looks like real Alligator Leather in both Black and Brown. It also has the 2-tone Vulchromatic series which features two colors. And it has the Ballistic series which is a pattern that looks like real canvas but is actually pure rubber. All bands are made in Switzerland with the highest standards possible.
