With a career that spans over three decades in the music industry, Pharrell Williams has managed to secure a place as one of the most prominent musical artists and producers of the last twenty years. He has managed to parlay his musical success into a number of business ventures as well, including being named a creative director at Louis Vuitton in 2023.

Having been named the “Best Dressed Man in the World” by Esquire in 2005, it may not come as much of a surprise that Williams has an extensive luxury watch collection that is valued at around 10 million dollars. Below, we will learn more about the early years, musical career, and watch collection of the producer, singer, and fashion designer.

Who is Pharrell Williams?

Pharrell Williams was born on April 5th, 1973, in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His father, Pharaoh, was a handyman, and his mother, Carolyn, was a teacher. During his seventh-grade summer, Williams would meet Chad Hugo, his lifelong musical partner, at a band camp.

Early Years

The two would go on to form the production duo The Neptunes. They entered a high school talent show and were discovered by producer and singer Teddy Riley, whose recording studio was next to the high school.

Williams would go on to write Riley’s verse on the 1992 Wreckx-n-Effect hit “Rump Shaker,” though the Neptunes did not contribute any production to the track.

Mainstream Success in the Early 2000’s

The Neptunes would have some success with the 1998 Noreaga single “Superthug.” However, it was in 2000 that the group would have its first proper hit, with Mystikal’s “Shake Ya…” The song would prove to be a massive success, and would lead the group to produce tracks for the likes of Jay-Z and Nelly, for whom they produced “Hot in Herre,” another song that would prove to be wildly successful and have crossover appeal on both rap and mainstream charts.

The Neptunes were one of the most dominant production duos of the early 2000’s, producing for artists as varied as Kelis, Britney Spears, and Babyface. Williams would go on to release his first solo album, In My Mind, in 2006. While it was well-received critically, it was not a huge success commercially as some of his prior work, and he continued to both produce with the Neptunes and release albums with his band, N.E.R.D.

2013 would prove to be arguably the most important year in William’s career, as he would provide vocals for two songs that still remain popular to this day: “Get Lucky,” which he co-wrote along with Daft Punk and legendary producer Nile Rogers, and “Happy,” which he wrote, performed, and produced as part of the soundtrack for Despicable Me 2. Both songs would garner Williams multiple award nominations that year.

In more recent years, Williams has turned his attention to other ventures as well. From seasons seven through ten, he was a judge on NBC’s The Voice. In addition to his production and performing work, he is now working with Louis Vuitton as its Men’s Creative Director. He is currently in his second season with the company.
