Though not available to the public at the time, the Luminor model was introduced by Panerai in 1950, replacing the Radiomir. The company worked in secrecy supplying watches to the Italian Navy at the time and named the model after the tritium-based powder used as luminescence in the new model. One of its most distinguishing characteristics is the patented crown-protecting device that gives the diver’s watch its unique shape.
