The Beatles

On the Global Beatle’s Day, we commemorate one of the greatest pop bands the legendary British band ‘The Beatles’, recalling the timepieces worn by each one of the members of the band.

Not only did The Beatles influence the music world, but they also shaped fashion in many ways. Making fashion statements such as slick hair and suits, they also made mop tops, collarless jackets, neon suits, and even facial hair fashionable. The Beatles did not only sell records; they successfully set trends and became a worldwide cultural phenomenon.

With a very classic taste but very selected high-end luxury watches, here are some of the Patek Philippe models worn by 3 members of the band, which included Paul McCartney,  John Lennon, and Ringo Starr.

John Lennon singer – songwriter of The Beatles

John Lennon proudly owned a unique and rare Patek Philippe reference 2499. An unparalleled wristwatch by Patek Philippe, considered an exceptionally rare model – manufactured only for a brief period of time between the years of 1950 and 1985 – Ref. 2499 is widely considered to be one of the most remarkable wristwatches ever designed by Patek Philippe. With only 349 units produced in history – an average of nine pieces per year – Ref. 2499 exhibits both singularity and exceptional craftsmanship. The model holds an eminent position among the firm’s perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatches.

It’s not confirmed whether the watch was a gift, but he sure looked proud to be wearing such a unique and rare Patek. A perpetual calendar chronograph (to one-up Ringo’s “basic” perpetual calendar). With three subdials – a 30-minute register combined with leap year, date combined with moon-phases and 12-hour register with constant seconds; and apertures for day and month.
The watch is clearly visible in multiple photographs of Lennon, but its whereabouts today are entirely unknown.

Ringo Starr wearing Patek Philippe ‘Jumbo’ Aquanaut – Reference 6065-1A

Ringo Starr, better known as the drummer of The Beatles has also often been spotted with a Patek Philippe ‘Jumbo’ Aquanaut Reference 6065-1A. Before this though, he used to be the owner of a very rare piece – a Patek Philippe ref 3448 in yellow gold, as shown below which was auctioned off in 2015 for a whopping $180,000 in California. This model was the first automatic perpetual calendar that Patek Philippe released; only 586 were produced and it was discontinued in 1982. The watch is on a worn-in strap from famous London jeweler Asprey, indicating he may have purchased it there, to begin with, adding value for collectors.

Sir Paul McCartney, better known as the co-lead vocalist and bassist for the Beatles, isn’t particularly known as a watch collector. However, nowadays he has been spotted on several occasions wearing a Patek Philippe Aquanaut reference 5167A. It was first discovered wearing his Patek Philippe Aquanaut back in October of 2011, he loves the watch so much he is frequently photographed wearing it, including his wedding day in 2011. Later in March 2012 on the cover Rolling Stones Magazine, we see Sir Paul McCartney sporting his Patek Philippe Aquanaut [Reference 5167A].

With a rounded octagon case, inspired by that of the Nautilus. The watch comes with a rubber Patek Philippe strap, complete with a Calatrava-logoed deployant clasp. The strap is made of a new composite material ultra-resistant to wear, salt water and UV radiation.

“Somebody said to me, ‘But the Beatles were anti-materialistic.’ That’s a huge myth. John and I literally used to sit down and say, ‘Now, let’s write a swimming pool.'” –Paul McCartney
