While Rubber B’s primary focus will always be the world of horology, this does not mean that our interests lie exclusively with watches. Rubber B is always fascinated when the world of watchmaking intersects with other areas of interest, and we have written in the past about the watch collections of several sports in this very blog. Occasionally, Rubber B will notice that an athlete has added a new timepiece to their collection, and we like to celebrate this when it does occur.

For those who follow sports, they are probably aware that Giannis Antetokounmpo, better known by his affectionate moniker, “The Greek Freak,” has recently signed a contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks, which is the only team he has played for thus far during his fairly brief NBA career. Many people noticed that he was wearing a brand new watch to his contract signing – but what kind of timepiece was it? Before Rubber B tells you, we would like to take a brief moment to go into a little more detail about who exactly Giannis Antetokounmpo is.

Who is Giannis Antetokounmpo, AKA The Greek Freak?

Giannis Antetokounmpo is a Greek-Nigerian basketball player who was born on December 6, 1994, in Athens, Greece. His family came from Nigeria, and because of Greece’s citizenship rules, he and his parents were not immediately able to gain Greek citizenship. Because of this, as well as other cultural factors, he and his family struggled to find work.

In order to help provide for the family, he and his older brother, Thanasis, helped provide for the family by selling watches and other wares on the streets. In 2007, he began playing amateur basketball, and by 2009, he was playing for the youth team in Filathlitikos.
