Rolex Introduces Stainless Steel Sky-Dwellers in 2017

The most complicated watch currently offered by Rolex, the Sky-Dweller has been available only in precious metal configurations until now. At Baselworld 2017 the watchmaker introduced several new Sky-Dwellers in combinations of gold and stainless steel. The photo above shows the two-tone version in a combination of yellow gold and stainless steel.

The yellow gold/stainless steel configuration comes with a champagne dial as shown in the above photo. It is also available with a black or white dial. This combination evokes the aesthetic of the Datejust, Rolex’s classic dress watch. It features rectangular hour markers filled with Chromalight luminescence. This is a departure from the Roman and Arabic numerals used to mark the hours on the precious metal versions.

The combination that has been talked about the most since the international trade show is the white gold and stainless steel Sky-Dweller. The close up photo above shows the blue dial of this version which has already commanded a waiting list at many Rolex Authorized Dealers around the world. The white gold and steel configuration is also available with a white or black dial. At a modest price point, this opens up a new market for the watchmaker’s most innovative complication.

On their official website, Rolex has added tutorials on how to set the time and date on this complicated watch. This and the improved luminescence makes the model more accessible to the masses. All Sky-Dweller models are powered by a 9001 self-winding mechanical movement manufactured in-house by the watchmaker. The 42mm case features the fluted bezel that is characteristic of their dress watches and the Oyster bracelet is secured by a folding Oysterclasp fitted with a 5mm Easylink comfort extension.
