Oftentimes, the Rubber B blog is dedicated to articles that focus on the historical or technical aspects of the world of horology, which is fitting because we are a leading producer of custom rubber watch straps. However, occasionally, we also like to write about high-profile watch collectors – especially if it is not common knowledge that the person in question is a watch collector.
One of these people is Michael Strahan, the noted football player who has long enjoyed a second act as a media personality. Let’s take a couple of moments to further examine the life of Michael Strahan and see what he has currently been up to since he retired from football.
Where Did Michael Strahan’s Career Begin?
Michael Strahan was born on November 21, 1971, in Houston, Texas. The child of two athletic parents – his father is a retired Army major and boxer, and his mother is a basketball coach – Strahan played football in high school and was successful enough at it to be offered a scholarship to Texas Southern University. Afterward, he would be drafted by the New York Giants as a defensive end and formally begin his professional football career in 1993.
Though he would have a slow start during his first four years, during his fifth season, in 1997, Strahan finally had his first proper breakout season, recording a career-high 14 sacks that season. He would be voted into his first Pro Bowl team that season and also be named a First Team All-Pro by the Associated Press as well.
From 1997-2005, Michael Strahan was arguably the most formidable defensive end in all of the NFL, and many coaches held him up as the ideal defensive player for their own teams. However, Strahan was not immune to injuries, especially since playing on the defensive line is, by its nature, one of the more physical positions in football.
In 2007, after beating the New England Patriots in what was arguably one of the most thrilling Super Bowls in the last couple of decades, Strahan finally decided to end his playing career on a high note after 15 years with the Giants. However, just because he retired from football did not mean that Michael Strahan would be retreating from the public eye.
What Did Michael Strahan Do After Retiring From Football?
After spending some time as a football commentator on Fox NFL Sunday and guest hosting Live with Regis and Kelly over 20 times in a span of two years, Strahan was selected as Regis Philbin’s permanent replacement in 2012. This was a position he held until 2016, when he would leave the show to take a full-time position with Good Morning America. This would cause a great deal of controversy in the television world, especially with his former co-host, Kelly Ripa.
The reason for this was that, according to Ripa, Strahan had not given her any advance notice that he would be leaving the show for another position, especially a higher profile one on the same network. Ripa appeared to be genuinely blindsided about this, and stated her surprise in several interviews on the topic. As of this time, though, it seems the two have tentatively mended fences.
Strahan has also moved into the world of game show hosting as well. Since 2016, Strahan has hosted an annual revival of The $100,000 Pyramid, which airs on Sunday nights during the summer as part of a block of programming where celebrities host game show revivals. Considering how busy Strahan seems to enjoy keeping, it is likely that we will see him in other places on television for years to come.
Is Michael Strahan Married and Does He Have Children?
While Michael Strahan is not currently married, he has previously been married twice and has four children – two with his first wife, and two with his second wife. He was previously engaged to Nicole Mitchell, the ex-wife of comedian Eddie Murphy, but the two ended their engagement in 2014.
