As the leading creator of custom rubber watch straps, Rubber B continually strives to use our platform to assist in the process of educating people across the globe about the world of horology. We believe it is vitally important to help make the arena of watchmaking a more transparent and equitable place, and in order to do so, education is a vital part of our attempt to fulfill this mission statement.
To that end, we continually use our blogging platform as a way to further our education outreach goals and make the world of watchmaking more accessible to those who want to learn more about it, regardless of where they may be located. We often produce articles on a wide variety of different topics, including important current events in the world of watchmaking, notable moments in horology history, and technical pieces that focus on explaining how watches actually work from a mechanical standpoint. We will also occasionally write pieces that focus on timepieces in pop culture or fashion as well.
Today, we are going to be writing about our top five bronze watches. As we start to head into summer, bronze watches are a great alternative to the timepiece you normally wear throughout the year. Their rustic and vintage style is a welcome change of pace and will fit perfectly with whatever clothes you choose to wear over the next couple of months.
It is important to note that the following list is being stated at random, so the first item is not our “first choice.” Ultimately, we thought it would be more beneficial to present you with a series of informed selections and then allow you to pick your favorite from there. And as always, with any type of list article, these are just our humble opinions – nothing more, nothing less.
IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph – Spitfire Bronze
There were a lot of watches that we could have chosen to open this article with, but ultimately, we went with the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Spitfire for two important reasons. From an aesthetic standpoint, this is one of the most effortlessly cool watch designs we have seen in a very long time.
This timepiece looks like it would absolutely be at home in an Indiana Jones movie, and we mean that in the best way possible. Its vintage style is utterly cool, and at only $6,500, it is still a relatively affordable timepiece, especially for those who are just getting into watch collecting.
Panerai Submersible Bronzo – PAM 382
Depending on who you ask, this particular timepiece is responsible for bringing back the bronze watch style in more recent years. Released by Panerai in 2011 to pretty much universal acclaim, Panerai only ended up making a limited number of these watches and ended up being very pleasantly surprised when the demand for them significantly outpaced the supply.
As a result of that, these watches are now considered to be something of a collector’s item. Because of this, it is a bit of a challenge to find them for under $20,000, and as such, they should be considered primarily more for advanced collectors who have spent some time in the world of horology.
Tudor – Black Bay Bronze
Tudor has, over the last couple of years, undertaken a significant campaign to establish itself as much more than the “little brother” of its parent company, Rolex. To a large degree, that campaign has been successful, as they have been experimental, and exciting, in the newer watches that they have been producing, putting out timepieces that industry experts haven’t seen coming.
The bronze edition of the Black Bay combines the modern elegance of European watchmaking with the vintage appeal of a bronze watch. Also, the more this watch is exposed to the elements, the more it develops a unique patina of its own, meaning that the watch ages gracefully – how often does one see that happen?
Oris – Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze
For those who may have a smaller wrist size, the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze may be the perfect bronze watch for you. Despite its name, the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze measures at a very svelte 36 mm, making it an ideal choice for those needing something a little smaller than the traditional luxury watch sizes on the market.
It also doesn’t hurt that this timepiece is fully committed to its vintage style, with an army green dial that perfectly complements the bronze casing of the watch.
Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days – PAM 671
On the other end of the scale, the Panerai Luminor Submersible 1950 3 Days is big, bold, and sure to grab attention wherever you may be wearing it. Measuring in at a very sturdy 47 mm, this is a timepiece that is made to be both durable and noticeable. Being that there are only 1,000 of these watches in existence, finding one is something of a challenge, and if you are in the market for one, be prepared to be searching for the long haul.
