For those familiar with the world of endurance racing or Formula 1, Michael Schumacher is one of the most prominent figures the sport has ever produced. Schumacher raced for seventeen years professionally, with fifteen of those years being consecutive, resulting in an impressive 91 career wins.
Upon his second, and final, retirement, in 2012, Audemars Piguet decided to craft a commemorative Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph in his honor. Despite the fact that the Royal Oak is a highly popular watch among professional athletes, it is very rare that the company will name a watch after one. With that in mind, we will take a closer look at the life, career, and achievements of Michael Schumacher.
Who is Michael Schumacher?
Michael Schumacher was born on January 3, 1969, in Hurth, which was, at that time, part of West Germany. His father, Rolf, was a bricklayer who later owned a local go-karting track, and his mother, Elisabeth, who oversaw the track’s canteen and served food and drinks to guests.
By the age of six, Schumacher had won his first youth club championship. He would continue to show a gift for racing, but he came across a legal issue, as one has to be 14 to have a karting license in Germany. To maneuver around this, the family would procure a license in Luxembourg. He would go on to win the German Junior Kart Championship, and then receive his karting license in Germany a year later.
Michael Schumacher’s Early Racing Career
In 1988, Schumacher would make his first foray into single-car racing by entering the German Formula Ford and Formula König series. He would go on to win the latter, marking the first notable win of his adult racing career. The following year, he would sign with Willi Webber’s Formula Three team.
With funding from Weber, he would go on to compete in the German Formula Three series, winning the title in 1990. He would win the Macau Grand Prix the same year, albeit under controversial circumstances. He attempted a dangerous maneuver that caused the driver behind him to crash into him, and while Schumacher would go on to win the race, he did so without a rear wing.
Mainstream Success in Racing
Michael Schumacher would make his formal Formula One debut at the 1991 Belgian Grand Prix for the Irish Jordan- Ford team. He would serve as a last-minute replacement for Bertrand Gachot, who was serving a prison sentence for aggravated assault at the time.
Schumacher would eventually join the Benneton-Ford team, which he would race for from 1991-1995. In 1994, he would win his first Driver’s Championship, which would prove to be a significant moment in Schumacher’s career. However, this season would also see the death of Aryton Senna, a Brazilian Formula One driver, which would force those within the sport to have hard conversations about its safety.
In 1996, Schumacher would go on to join the Ferrari racing team, a position he would occupy for the next ten years. Ferrari had been struggling for several years at that point, and Schumacher was largely credited for helping to shape the most successful iteration of Ferrari’s racing team that the sport had ever seen.
In 2006, Schumacher would enter his first retirement. He would work with Ferrari until 2009, and then in 2010, he would return to Formula One for two more years, racing for the Mercedes Benz team. He would leave the sport for good in 2012, with his spot on the Mercedes Benz team being handed off to Lewis Hamilton, who would himself go on to have a very successful Formula One racing career.
Today, Michael Schumacher’s legacy as one of the leading figures of Formula One is unimpeachable. He was particularly well-known for his performance in inclement weather conditions, which earned him the nicknames “Rain King” or “Rain Master” in the press.
What Is The Michael Schumacher Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph?
