About Cartier History

The Cartier brand is known for selling some of the finest luxury watches and jewelry in the world. The “House of Cartier” was founded in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier when he inherited his jewelry workshop in Paris at the age of 29. Almost a decade later, in 1856, Cartier got his first royal client, French Princess Mathilde. By 1904, Cartier had built a reputation for himself and was named as the official vendor to King Edward the seventh of the United Kingdom.

Cartier is currently owned by the granddaughter of Pierre Cartier. Best known for jewelry and watches, Cartier also sells perfumes, eyewear, fashion accessories, money clips, cufflinks, and stationery.

At a New York City auction, the watch was purchased for $379,500. Jackie O’s Cartier tank was one of three ever made in 1963. Her Cartier Tank Ordinaire was 18 karat gold and square shaped.

Things You Didn’t Know About Cartier

Along with the most expensive ruby, and watch ever sold at auction, Cartier adds a bracelet to that list. In the 1930s, married couple Edward the Third of the United Kingdom and Marry Wallis Simpson (a socialite from America) had several pieces commissioned from Cartier over the course of their marriage. One of those pieces included a panther bracelet that was made with 545 set diamonds and included caliber cut Onyx stones and two Emeralds to represent the panther’s eyes. In 2010, the bracelet earned the title of the most expensive bracelet ever sold at auction with the winning bid being seven million dollars (even though there were a few small stones missing).
