Bruce Springsteen and his love for watches is probably the 2nd love. Or third, if you include his musically talented wife and love of his life. Like many successful men, great timepieces tend to find you over the years. If you look at many of Springsteen’s early pictures, he is not wearing any watch or jewelry of any kind. Over the years though, he has collected many timepieces that are clear statements.

Bruce Springsteen and his Love for Watches

Bruce Springsteen has been seen with many timepieces over the years. He has been seen with mostly vintage timepieces including a vintage Bell and Ross. Although it is a bit fuzzy in the picture, it appears to be a black dial with luminescent hour markers with a steel case. It has a tachymetric scale around the steel bezel and two pushers on either side of the winding crown.

Fast cars, fast women, and fast guitars require a man with such passions to own a timepiece that can keep up. This timepiece would look great either on stage or off – with or without the leather jacket. Clearly, if the older and wiser Springsteen could give his younger self a timepiece, this might be the one he would choose.

The Bell and Ross timepiece has a history that stretches back to the days of WW1 when it initially made pocket watches. Its watches are made for legibility, functionality, reliability, and precision. In almost every item, Springsteen embodies those qualities in his own music.

The next timepiece that Springsteen sports are a Tag Heuer Autavia “Orange Boy”. This automatic chronometer is extremely rare. It has a big Orange hand with touches of luminescent orange on both the hour and minute hands and hour markers around the inner dial.

The 400 mph tachymeter scale is imprinted on the black bezel. However, interestingly, this timepiece has pushers in the standard locations at 2 and 4 o’clock but the winding crown is on the opposite side of the watch – at 9 o’clock. Unlike many tool watches made for racecar drivers, this timepiece also comes with a date window at 6 o’clock. It has two dials – a 1-12 dial at the 9 o’clock position and a 30-second dial at the 3 o’clock position.

This timepiece comes with a 41 mm case which is 14 mm thick and a crystal that is made of plexiglass. It was made in the early 1970s and probably picked up by Springsteen on one of his early tours. It is powered by a Heuer self-winding caliber 12.

The picture at the beginning of this post shows Springsteen with a Rolex Submariner. This is also a vintage timepiece showing a nice patina of yellowed hour markers and no date aperture. Although it may be hard to come by a vintage Submariner like this one you can pick up a new Rolex Submariner which will easily become one of your prized possessions. The main difference between Springsteen’s timepiece and the new one is the new caliber 3230 on the newly released Sub – featuring a power reserve of 70 hours.

Springsteen also owns a base Panerai Luminor. It has a steel case and a black dial. The American rocker seems to love timepieces with black dials, black bands, and stainless steel cases. Although this Panerai is larger than most of the previous timepieces, Springsteen is consistent with the need for a masculine-looking piece. He isn’t into yellow gold, diamond-crusted anything, or timepieces that are over the top with color or style. He opts for the common-man style timepieces that most men could afford.

This mirrors his roots. His father and mother were New Jersey working-class folks. And his music is imbued with the history of his hard-working family and humble upbringing. Bruce Springsteen and his love for watches is clearly a result of his humble tastes.
