DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ROLEX SUBMARINER 16610 AND ROLEX SUBMARINER 116610

Rolex Submariner 16610 VS- Rolex Submariner 116610

The Rolex Submariner is one of the most highly prized timepieces in horological history.  This is why the Rolex Vintage Submariners are such hot commodities for watch collectors.  The Submariner was launched in 1953 with Oystersteel.

The Rolex Submariner 16610 was produced between 1988 and 2010.  This is a long 22 years of production for one of Rolex’s most beloved timepieces.  The 116610LN had a rather short-lived production timeframe of only 10 years.  At first glance and second glance, there really doesn’t appear to be many differences between these two rock star timepieces.

Case Size

However, if you look closely you can see that there are subtle differences between the Rolex Submariner 16610 and Rolex Submariner 116610.  Although the case size is the same on both – achieving 40mm, the 116610 appears larger.

The crown guards on the more modern 116610 are wider than the 16610 which have rather thin lugs by comparison.  Although both use the Oystersteel band, the case tapers to a more narrow case where the lugs meet the bracelet.  The 116610 has almost 3 mm more width in this location although the actual lugs remain the same.

The Rolex Submariner 116610 has a more solid Oyster bracelet with extra weight, in comparison with the Rolex Submariner Ref. 16610.  In addition, the gridlock is more precise in Ref. 116610 with the micro-adjusting feature.

The Caliber

Both the Rolex Submariner 16610 and Rolex Submariner 116610 are powered by the caliber 3135 movement.  In fact, that movement has been the staple of the Submariner lineup for over 30 years, until 2020 when the higher 70-hour power reserve caliber 3235 finally was added to the new 41mm Submariner.

The 3135 only supported 48 hours of power reserve, but it is one of the easiest Rolex calibers to service.  It operates at 28,800 beats per hour. It has a Blue Parachrom hairspring and KIF shock absorber.

It comes with a hacking seconds feature where the seconds hand comes to a complete stop with the winding crown is pulled out.  Also, the date quickset function could be changed without disturbing the timekeeping hands.  The 3135 powered many Rolex timepieces including the Sea-Dweller, the Deepsea, Yacht-Master, Date, and Datejust.

The Bezel

The most notable improvement or modification between the Rolex Submariner 16610 and Rolex Submariner 116610 has been the ceramic bezel of the 116610. In contrast, the Rolex Submariner reference 16610 has a non-ceramic bezel made with aluminum inserts.

There is a slight difference in the bezel mechanism. The 16610 has a single-click spring control in the bezel’s rotation. The 116610 by contrast uses four click springs set into the case. This results in a perfect alignment of the bezel markers, making it solid and easy to turn.

Differences in Lume

The Rolex Submariner 16610 has a Super Luminova material with luminous technology which glows in a green color.

The Rolex Submariner 116610, by contrast, has a Super Luminova material with Luminous technology which glows in a bluish-green color. In addition, there is an obvious size difference – the larger Maxi-Dial of the 116610 is much easier to see both in the daytime and at night time.
