The Rolex Sky-Dweller is definitely a unique timepiece with extensive complications built into it. Although Rolex has had tremendous designs over the years, it isn’t known for creating the most complications in a timepiece. Yet, with the caliber 9001 movement, it created 14 patents and a design with extensive complications which rival the most challenging watchmaking designs in the world. This Oyster Perpetual watch is a certified self-winding chronometer with 72 hours of power reserve, as well as a waterproof resistance of 100 meters.

Launched in 2012, the Rolex Sky-Dweller became an absolute sensation. The timepiece is found on the wrist of elite athletes like LeBron James and Conor McGregor, and even A-List celebrities like Tom Hardy and musical genius Jay-Z.

This is not just some normal GMT Master II, which is one of the greatest timepieces in Rolex’s collection which is often copied. The GMT Master II was a significant achievement in horological history. However, the Sky-Dweller eclipses that with a design that is tremendous in its utility and beautiful in appearance.

The GMT function of the Sky-Dweller uses a unique Ring Command system that works with a rotatable bezel. It has an annual calendar that illustrates the calendar month with the aperture outside the hour marker. The date window appears at 3 o’clock and it has the traditional cyclops lens for easy readability.

The center ring illustrates the 2nd time zone with a 24-hour clock with a fixed inverted red triangle on the top of the dial indicating the time clock position. The result is a very readable date and time timepiece with an independent 2nd time zone also easily readable. The Sky-Dweller is more than just a GMT timepiece. It is actually a perpetual calendar and is able to account for leap year, and the various month lengths including 28, 29, 30 and 31 days without any adjustment. This is a beautiful design which athletes and actors that are often traveling would love to have in their collection.

It is powered by a new Caliber 9001 which is produced entirely in-house by Rolex. It has a 72 hour power reserve and a bidirectional self-winding perpetual rotor in its automatic movement. The oscillator is a Rolex developed Paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring device with high-performance Paraflex shock absorbers.

It has a centre hour, minute and seconds hands. The 24-hour GMT display appears on its off-centre disc. The instantaneous annual calendar at 3 o’clock has a rapid-date setting mechanism. It also has a stop-seconds for precise time setting built into the crown action. The amazing month display appears via 12 apertures around the circumference of the dial.

The case is a larger 42mm case which is larger than most Rolex timepieces. This fact alone has helped to make the timepiece more popular since the trend has been moving to larger timepiece faces in recent years. Although it is not considered a dive watch, it does still have a dual-waterproofness system and is rated to support a depth of 330 feet. That is more than sufficient for most “beach-dwellers.”

The name Sky-Dweller is similar to the Sea-Dweller name. With this name Rolex is clearly saying that this is the traveler’s timepiece and ideal for pilots, business travelers and actors/athletes that may be traversing the globe on a regular basis.

The Sky-Dweller lists for about $40,000 but is still in high demand in today’s environment, driving actual prices up to nearly $70,000.

The new Reference 326238 comes with a yellow gold case and the option of a bright black, intense white, or champagne colored dial. It also comes with a newly designed rubber band. There are plenty of other models to choose from including Oystersteel and white gold, Everose gold, and mixed Oystersteel and Yellow gold options.

Besides the Oysterflex bands, Rolex also offers the Oyster bracelet with matching metal colorings (yellow gold, Rolesor (Oystersteel and Yellow Gold), Everose Gold, and Oystersteel with white gold. They even offer the Jubilee bracelet for a more luxurious look. The Jubilee was developed in 1945 and has 5 links in the bracelet as opposed to the Oyster style bracelet which has only 3 links.
