Rubber B has become well-known as a highly respected crafter of custom rubber watch bands for timepieces from some of the most respected watchmakers in the field, including such brands as Patek Philippe, IWC, and Breitling. Rubber B has a variety of straps in different colors and styles in our product portfolio that are appropriate for both business/formal wear and more casual situations as well. This article is going to focus on a watch, however, that was not mentioned in that earlier list – the PAM 510 Marina 8 days, which is a Panerai timepiece.

The PAM 510 has several interesting things about it from a historical and horological perspective, so we are going to spend some time looking at what makes this watch unique at the outset, and then move on to examine it more closely from a technical and aesthetic standpoint.

Panerai 510

What is Unique About the PAM 510 in Terms of Panerai Watches?

Originally released in 2013, the PAM 510 was a concerted effort by Panerai to generate some excitement about the Luminor style of watches, which has long been one of their most popular product lines. In this particular instance, they were rather successful in their endeavor, as the watch continues to remain popular now, almost a decade after its release.

One of the ways they managed to accomplish this was by implementing a new movement, the Caliber P.5000. This was significant not only because it was a new movement, but because the movement had been manufactured completely in-house by Panerai.

Why Are In-House Movements Significant for Panerai Collectors?

In order to fully answer this question, you have to be somewhat aware of the history of Panerai, and how the company fits into the landscape of the horological world as a whole. While Panerai has been known for making world-class tool watches for decades now, manufacturing movements are not something they were particularly well-known for.

In fact, many of the brand’s most popular, and sought-after, watches feature movements that were made by other companies. This includes the PAM 21, which uses a vintage Rolex movement and is worth over $200,000 as of this time, the PAM 203, which used an Angelus movement (and is worth over $100,000 now), or the Pam Radiomir 1940, which contains a Minerva movement.

As a result of this fact, when watch collectors found out that a new Panerai watch was going to be released with an entirely new, in-house crafted movement, there was considerable excitement to see how Panerai would fare in their experiment.

What Are The Technical Specifications of the PAM 510?

While there are a number of technical things to cover with regards to this watch, let’s spend a few moments on the movement, as it was such a significant part of the general fanfare surrounding this watch upon its release.

The movement for this watch, the Caliber P. 5000, is manually wound and has a power reserve of eight days, which further explains the nomenclature of the watch. The movement itself is a historical homage – in this instance, to the Angelus timepieces that had the same power reserve, many of which are prized today among collectors.

The case measures 44 mm in diameter and is made from highly polished stainless steel. The bezel is also made from polished steel as well. This timepiece also contains 21 jewels and 146 components, which is well above what you would normally see in a watch, even from a luxury watchmaker such as Panerai.

This speaks to just how mechanically complicated this watch is, and how impressive it is from an engineering and construction standpoint. It is also water-resistant for up to 300 meters, which is to be expected from a well-established line of dive watches.

What Does the PAM 510 Actually Look Like?

In some ways, Panerai was slightly ahead of their time in terms of their design style. And while it would not be fair to say that they fully anticipated the interest in minimalism in terms of design style that has taken hold in recent years, they were certainly well-positioned to capitalize on the trend when it came to pass.

Panerai has mastered the art of crafting tool watches that still have an elegant, warm feel to their design. The dial for this watch is very minimal, displaying only the 12, 3, and 6 numerals, with the other hours indicated by small hash marks.  The name of the watch is at the top of the face, while the bottom of the dial has the words “Panerai 8 Days” inscribed onto it.

All of the numbers are luminescent, using a proprietary compound that Panerai has been using for decades in their watches. This is notable because the PAM 510 is a dive watch, meaning that even in less than ideal lighting conditions, the face of this watch is still highly visible.

Where Can You Purchase the PAM 510?

The PAM 510 was not a limited run timepiece, making it relatively easy to find online or with the help of a trusted jeweler. In terms of its pricing, the watch officially retails for $6,900 on Panerai’s website.
