At Baselworld 2000, Rolex introduced the Caliber 4130 in their Cosmograph Daytona model, replacing the Zenith movement that powered the model prior to the development of their in-house movement. Featuring a vertical clutch that improves the functionality of the chronograph, this self-winding mechanical movement represents a technological milestone for the watchmaker.

With the reduction of components of the chronograph mechanism, there became more space for the mainspring which allowed engineers to increase its size and as a result increase the power reserve from 50 hours to 72. With less components in the way, the mainspring can be replaced without the need to disassemble the entire movement in the process. It also possesses a larger balance wheel with a Parachrom hairspring, another innovation that came with the introduction of the 4130 movement. The watchmakers claims that the Parachrom hairspring increases the precision of the movement tenfold.

The 4130 represents an accomplishment in watchmaking that has since been built upon by Rolex. All of the current models feature movements made in-house by the watchmaker in their manucature in Switzerland. For more information on the 4130 movement, visit rolex.com.
