Rolex watches are often modified by non-affiliated companies looking to offer a custom luxury appeal to discerning individuals. However, throughout its great history, ROLEX has been very wary of custom treatments to it’s watches, and most recently has begun micro-managing the attainability of their parts, possibly in order to suppress service centers and customers alike from altering the appearance of their Rolex watches.
Aftermarket companies have found many other ways to modify Rolex watches for their customers looking to stand out from the crowd. This may be the reason that Rolex released its one and only “DLC” watch, a black version of the Deepsea Sea-Dweller with a limited edition of 86 pieces in honor of Jacques Picard – a Swiss Oceanographer and engineer of underwater exploration vehicles. He lived to be 86 years old, hence the series number.
DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) materials display some of the typical properties of a diamond, and are applied to the watch as a coating, giving the watch a “blackened” appearance. Rolex named this special DLC Deepsea the Jacques Picard Single Red Deepsea Sea-Dweller.
