Rolex Submariner Nicknames

2023 is going to be a historically significant year for Rolex. This is specifically true of its arguably most famous watch, the Rolex Submariner. The Rolex Submariner has become the de facto industry standard for dive watches since it was originally released in 1953.

In order to celebrate this momentous occasion, Rubber B is going to take a look back at some of the most notable Rolex Submariner nicknames that have been given to various Submariner models over the years. It is worth noting that these are Rolex Submariner nicknames that have been coined by collectors and the horological press. As a matter of company policy, Rolex does not refer to these watches by these names in any of their promotional material.

James Bond – Ref. 6538

Rolex Submariner Nicknames

One of the earliest Rolex Submariner nicknames is also one of the most famous within this collection of watches. Reference number 6538 is informally known as “James Bond,” because it appeared in the very first Bond film, “Dr. No.” While Omega is now the official watch of James Bond, Ian Fleming mentioned in his original novels that Bond wore a Rolex watch.

Over the course of his time in the iconic role, Sean Connery would wear several iterations of the Rolex Submariner on screen. However, reference number 6538 is the one that has been officially given this nickname. It remains a popular watch among collectors, decades after its original release.

Milsub – Ref. 6538, 6540, 5513, 5517

Rolex Submariner Nicknames

The Milsub is another line of Rolex timepieces that has an interesting connection to the British military. Milsub is a combination of the words “military” and “submarine.” These watches were produced to the specifications of the British Armed Forces.

There were four total versions of the Milsub watches that have been released over the years. The 6538 and the 6540 references were released in the 1950’s. The 5513 and the 5517 references would come along several years later, in the 1970’s. Either way, each version of this watch demonstrates the precise craftsmanship that Rolex has become known for over several decades.

Bart Simpson – Ref. 5512, 5513

Rolex Submariner Nicknames

Although these watches were originally released in the 1960’s, these two versions of the Submariner, which were in production for a very limited time, would become most famous under the name of a character who would come along several decades later – Bart Simpson. The rambunctious and iconic character would come to define American animation for an entire generation around the world.

But why were these watches given this nickname in the first place? It has to do with the golden coronet, or crown, at the top of the watch. It happens to bear an unusually strong resemblance to the hair of the legendary neighborhood menace, making it sought-after by collectors today.

Kermit – 16610

Rolex Submariner Nicknames

In 2003, Rolex decided to do something quite exciting for the Rolex Submariner in order to celebrate its 50th anniversary. They would add a bright green aluminum bezel to the watch, which the general public enthusiastically accepted. This was, in part, due to the fact that the bezel was the same color as the beloved Muppet frontman, Kermit the Frog.

The watch was discontinued in 2010, making it a still popular commodity among Submariner collectors.
