The Oscars 2022 Watch Spotting

At the Oscars 2022 watch spotting was in high gear as many of the leading men were wearing some of the finest timepieces made. This year we can certainly give the “bling king” award to DJ Khaled – the beat-maker king who is also an endorsement superstar. He has deals with Weight Watchers, Apple, Ciroc, Champs, and Mentos outside of his musical albums and other hip-hop projects he is involved in.

DJ Khaled totally crushed the competition with this “Billionaire Ashoka” timepiece from Jacob and Co. This timepiece has a rectangular shape similar to a Cartier Tank watch, but it has a skeleton dial and 260 carats of diamonds. Interestingly the winding crown is also a jewel-tipped rose-cut white diamond, similar to the shape Cartier uses on its crowns.

The Oscars 2022 Watch Spotting – DJ Khaled’s Billionaire Ashoka timepiece from Jacob and Co.

It is powered by a one-minute manual-wind tourbillon which comes with a 72-hour power reserve. The skeletonized caliber JCAM09 is chamfered and polished to a perfect finish. This is a one-of-a-kind timepiece since only 1 will ever be made.

The primary diamond in use on this timepiece is the ultra-rare Ashoka diamond cut created by William Goldberg and named after the third-century warrior and one of India’s greatest emperors King Ashoka Maurya. It has a rectangular shape and rounded corners. The bracelet alone has 252 precisely hand-set diamonds. The case itself has an additional 38 Ashoka Cut white diamonds amounting to nearly 37 carats. The dial’s hour markers have 11 baguette white diamonds used for the indices. The gemology in this timepiece is truly the thing that demonstrates the expert gem setters that have helped Jacob and Co become the leaders in the industry. At $18 million, this timepiece will definitely set its wearer apart, because few will have the money to pay for a timepiece of this caliber.

The great Rami Malek who depicted Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, and also plays the lead character in the TV series Mr. Robot, turned heads with this classic gold Cartier Tank MC timepiece. It has the classic rectangular shape that we also see in the Billionaire Ahsoka timepiece pictured above. However, the classic rose gold case matched with a brown crocodile leather band will always be exquisite.

This timepiece is powered by a caliber 1904-PS MC, with a calendar aperture at 3 o’clock and a small seconds counter at 6 o’clock. The case has a faceted sapphire on the tip of the crown. It has a decorated silvered flinqué dial and sword-shaped hands in blued steel. The strap is a semi-matte dark brown alligator-skin strap with a double adjustable folding buckle in rose gold. This is not a watch you would wear to the beach, but it is water-resistant to 100 feet. At $18,800 this isn’t the most expensive timepiece on the red carpet, but certainly one of the most time-honored and exquisite watches you could own.

Oscars 2022 – Jacob Elordi wore this Tag Heuer Monaco Chrono

Jacob Elordi from the show Euphoria wore this classic Steve McQueen-inspired timepiece – the Tag Heuer Monaco Chronograph reference CBL2113.FC6177. This automatic timepiece is inspired by the 1970’s racecar chronograph timepieces but is now powered by the Heuer 02 caliber which has an 80-hour power reserve. The 39mm case is shaped like a square which is certainly different from most Oyster shaped timepieces you will see on the market. However, the combination of the black dial, square silvery Panda-like dials, and the black leather band complete this masterpiece. This timepiece will not break the bank, as it is available for only $6750 on the Tag Heuer website.

Oscars 2022 – Jamie Dornan wore this Omega Speedmaster ’57

Jamie Dornan from Belfast was wearing this Omega Speedmaster ’57 reference 332.10.41.51.10.001. It has a 40.5 mm steel case and matching steel band with 20mm lugs in case you want to swap the band with something else. The timepiece has a sapphire crystal on both the front and see-through back. However, whereas the front of the timepiece is stunning, the see-through back is less spectacular.

Yet, this timepiece does have some unique features including anti-magnetism to 1.5 teslas and it is a “Master” chronometer-certified by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). It is water-resistant to 167 feet. However, its most noticeable feature is probably its beautiful green dial. At only $8,600 the timepiece is within buying power for most working actors, and Omega is a great brand to start one’s collection with.

Gian Luca Passi de Preposulo – Italian nobleman and husband to the spectacular Jessica Chastain donned a more classic version of this Gold Rolex Daytona. His timepiece has similar features with the exception of the red outer dial markings and red hand, and he has a black leather strap rather than the new Oysterflex strap. Older Daytonas do not have the new power reserve in the newer 4130 calibers that Rolex came out with only in recent years.

Regardless, the Rolex Daytona, especially the Panda Dial (black dial with lighter mini dials that look like eyes and a mouth of a “panda”), is in high demand. The oldest of these from the 60s and 70s are fetching outrageous prices in nearly any condition. This Italian knows his timepieces and is wearing a similar Daytona to this from the late 1990s.

Oscars 2022 – Shaun White wore this Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch

Olympic 3-time Gold Medalist Shaun White was wearing an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional with Moonshine Gold case and Moonshine Gold band. This reference 310.60.42.50.10.001 is not cheap, listed at $34,800, but it is certainly a stunning chronograph that you could still get your hands on since the Rolex Daytona equivalent would probably have you waiting in a line to acquire something similar.

This timepiece is ever so similar to the Daytona. It is a master chronometer-certified timepiece with 167 feet of water resistance. The Case is slightly larger at 42 mm than the Daytona. Also, the timepiece has the history of being of the heritage of the “First watch worn on the moon” which is immortalized as an engraving on the back of the timepiece.

Andrew Garfield – aka “Spiderman” – joined the Omega club with this timeless Speedmaster ’57. Omega provides a spectacular timepiece for the money and it has made a real push to mimic the look and feel of Rolex timepieces. Although this Chrono is only a 2 dial Chrono, as opposed to the Rolex 3 dial version, it does feature a date aperture at the 6 o’clock position. Also, the hands and hour markers on this timepiece are made with a more classic patina that makes it appear vintage without the worry of upkeeping a truly vintage timepiece (or having to pay obscene prices for one).

The black dial and black mini dials with the silver 41.5 mm case and silver bracelet make this watch a perfect accompaniment to a red carpet suit. At only $9,000 this timepiece is clearly a reasonably priced timepiece, especially compared to other Chronos. Yet it has all the features you could want from a top-tier timepiece.

Daniel Dae Kim from “Lost” wore this gorgeous Patek Philippe Ref 5070 Chrono which was made in the 1990s. Made from Yellow Gold, this timepiece is one of the few modern manual winding chronographs in the more recent era. Early version Rolex Daytona’s from the 1960s were manual wind and the market is so hot that it is next to impossible to secure one. Rolex moved to Automatic timepieces in the 1970s and on. However this 42mm chronograph is not only manual winding, but it is a tremendously unique chronograph with a more classic circular watch design.

It is certainly not a typical Oyster, and it has its Arabic numerals centered within the dial. The outer part of the dial has the tachymetric scale so that the bezel itself could be unfettered from any kind of markings. The result is a more traditional watch with gorgeous appeal with all the features of a true chronometer. This timepiece isn’t made today, but you could probably pick one up in an after-market for about $80,000.

Angus Cloud was one of the few A-listers to don an IWC timepiece. However, he has excellent taste as this Portugieser Automatic 40 reference IW358306 is a stunning and simplistic design that looks exquisite with his suit. This 40.4 mm case made from pink gold looks perfect against the brown leather band. It is powered by an 82200 Calibre with a 60-hour power reserve, with 31 jewels and a minimalistic 192 components. At $17,400 this is a pure man’s dress watch. It has gold Arabic numerals and a small seconds window at 6 o’clock. The only undeniable feature of this timepiece is that it simply makes the owner of it look like he belongs.

DJ D-Nice was wearing a unique outfit on the red carpet, but he decided to compliment the outfit with this Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Dual Time timepiece. It is amazing that we don’t see as many APs on the red carpet. However, AP certainly “represents” this Blue dial with the “Grande Tapisserie” pattern. It has a second time zone, day and night indicator, power reserve, hours, minutes, and date.

The stainless steel case is in the traditional octagonal shape found on all Royal Oak timepieces. It has a glare-proofed sapphire crystal where you can see its multitude of functions. Not to leave anything to chance AP uses white gold applied hour-markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating, so this timepiece is beautiful in both daytime and nighttime.
