What Are Some Vegan Watches Brands?

A pre-eminent creator of custom rubber watch straps, Rubber B has spent the last several years crafting watch straps for watches for some of the most highly respected watchmakers in both Europe and North America, including Rolex, Tudor, and Apple. Rubber B has a wide selection of colors, styles, and materials to choose from for these timepieces, and all of these straps are made exclusively from 100% vulcanized rubber. This last fact is particularly relevant to the subject of this article, wherein we will learn more about vegan watches.

Over the last decade, in particular, the vegan lifestyle has become more prominently featured in various cultural institutions, due in no small part to the fact that various celebrities, such as Joaquin Phoenix and Natalie Portman, have adopted vegan lifestyles. Therefore, it stands to reason that watchmaking companies would want to be a part of this movement. Below, we will briefly define what constitutes a “vegan watch” and then briefly explore several companies that are leading the way in this new and exciting field of horology.

What Is a Vegan Watch?

Oftentimes, the term “vegan” is heard when referring to someone’s diet, as it primarily relates to the consumption of various food products. However, in a broader sense, it can be defined as “any product whose production does not require the use of animal by-products.”

Companies such as Rubber B, which use sustainable materials, such as rubber, when producing their products, fall into this category. In terms of watchmakers, it would mean that the company does not use non-sustainable materials in the production of its watch, especially with regards to using animal skins for their watch straps.

What Are Some Prominent Vegan Watch Brands?

There are a handful of watchmaking firms that have especially focused on making sustainable, cruelty-free watches as their primary goal. While you may not be familiar with any of these companies offhand, the work they are doing is commendable and is certainly worthy of some attention.

Nordgreen

Nordgreen is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and has swiftly emerged as one of the leaders in this burgeoning area of horology. This is due in no small part to the high quality of their watches, which include cases made of 316L stainless steel and glass crafted from domed sapphire crystal, which is one of the most durable types of glass currently available on the market.

Nordgreen also allows consumers to visit their website and have a vegan watch built exactly to their specifications based on a series of pre-determined options. Most importantly though, Nordgreen sponsors an initiative known as its “Giving Back Program,” wherein a portion of the proceeds from every watch sold go to help fund one of three different charitable causes.

Hurtig Lane

Hurtig Lane, which is headquartered in Barcelona, Spain, took a very interesting path towards producing vegan watches. Its two founders were deeply moved after seeing a documentary entitled “The Earthlings,” which focused on the way animals were treated in the leather industry. Upon seeing the film, they decided to focus on crafting vegan watch straps by using a proprietary form of synthetic leather. This is crafted by blending cotton with polyurethane.

The cases for their watches are also made from stainless steel and contain no additional alloys, which helps them to maintain their color over a longer period of time.

Evig Grön

Evig Grön is located in Bioggio, Switzerland and as with many Swiss watchmaking companies, their primary aim is to add a sense of luxury and elegance to their vegan watches, making them truly a pioneer in this sub-section of watchmaking. However, their desire to be luxurious in no way, shape, or form detracts from the company’s clearly stated goal of making vegan watches.

This fact can even be seen in the company’s name, which is a shortened form of “Evigt Grönska,” which is Swedish for “evergreen.” Additionally, all of the company’s watches are made in strict accordance with Swiss watchmaking regulations, which are known to be among the most stringent in the world.

TIVC

TIVC, which is an Australian company, is actually an abbreviation for “Time IV Change,” which is a rather clever name for a company that produces watches. Its two founders feel very strongly about the idea that a single individual can produce meaningful, positive change within the world, and this philosophy is very much reflected in their watch lines.

TIVC’s primary claim to fame is using eco suede in their vegan watches. They also have an entire line of watches whose vegan watch straps are produced from pineapple leaf fibers, likely making them the first company to attempt to make watch straps from that kind of material.

Ksana

Ksana, as with several of the other companies previously mentioned here, was founded to solve a very specific problem. She founded the company after being unable to find a well-designed neon color watch that met her specifications. Ksana’s founder has gone on the record as saying that “Bold design will always remain at the heart of Ksana,” and based on the available designs that Ksana is currently carrying, that is a very true statement.

Many aspects of Ksana’s watches are inspired by the Scandinavian idea of minimalism, so if you are looking for a vegan watch that is a bit more ornamental in style, this likely isn’t the type of watch you are looking for.
